Since you don't know what it is, how do you know it 'needs' deadheading? It might be a once bloomer with attractive hips that you are about to massacre.

First, do no harm.

Doing anything to alter a stranger's house/property/possessions without permission seems like such an obvious "no" to me.

I say leave it alone. Especially if the owner is a plant lover, as we can be quite particular about who we let touch our plants and how things are done.

(Kinda related, but 12 years ago when my wife and I got married, my FIL took a cutting (with permission) from a rose at the house they were all staying at, took it home, and planted it. Pretty sure it's Dr. Huey)

Your intentions are very kind, Sylvia. But when I go on vacation, deadheading is one of the things I’d most like to escape from! I just packed another 90 gallon bin full of burnt rose blooms, not my idea of fun.

Enjoy your time there! And if you get a chance, go out to eat at Fat Olives, an absolutely wonderful restaurant. I got married at the Arboretum and we had our reception at Fat Olives :)
