squash pollination?

last modified: 2 years ago

I have moschata and pepo squash. Can these two species pollinate each other? I'm not seed-saving. I just want fruit, and my beds are small enough that hand fertilization is sometimes necessary. The issue is whether same-genus or same-species are needed for pollination.

I was faced with some female moschata flowers with no male moschata flowers, and so I used a male pepo flower to try to fertilize. Two different species. It seems to have worked. But I have read that within the Cucurbita genus, only plants of the same species can cross-pollinate. That's not consistent with what I see.
