Need help with kitchen window

Hi everyone! I want to add more light to my kitchen. Currently i have just one 30" window above my sink. I do not want to change my base cabinets, sink placement etc. The kitchen is almost new. My choices are :

A- replace the existing window with a larger one- 48" wide max

B- Add another 30" window adjacent to the current one.

If I enlarge the current window, I can keep the sink centered. If I add a window, the sink will be centered under the original window, but the OCD in me knows that the sink really should be centered between 2 windows.

Please see these rendering and let me know what you think? A or B?

    C. Save 10K of structural and exterior work, and add better lighting.

You are not going to match the existing window. You will be replacing it, and matching the new window. You also will need to open up the wall and add a larger support header. And deal with how the cuts in the wall integrate with the siding on the exterior.

I think 10K would be low for the project.

Move around the base cabinets , then figure out what size window would work.

Honestly - a larger window will help a little. I would just save the hassle and do more lighting.

" but the OCD in me knows that the sink really should be centered between 2 windows. "

What does your OCD tell you about the exterior of the house with the second window added? It may make your left eye twitch even worse.....................

    B.

The sink shouldn’t hog the window - the place where you prep deserves some light too. If asymmetry is a problem, I’d consider separating the two windows and have the new one centered over a prep area defined by, perhaps, a big cutting board.

None of the above. Show a photo (not a design board drawing) of your kitchen during the day and also note your current light sources and light bulbs. You probably just need improved lighting (higher kelvin in the 3000-4000 range) plus lighting from a variety of sources (sconces, recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting). Windows help with lighting during the daytime in best weather scenarios, but a layered lighting plan will help day or night and in any weather.

Didn't realize this was already installed. Can you post an actual picture of your kitchen? How high is the ceiling? How much room do you have above and below and to the right side of the existing window? Is 18" of window ( actually less because of the center stile ) really going to give you that much more light? Not sure what direction that faces.

I don't mind the offset sink but it's not ideal.

I would add a second window - no need for sink to be centered on one window and being able to prep in front of a window is fantastic! if youre spending the money i’d want more than just a slightly bigger window as well.

B for sure for purely aesthetic reasons. The lights look so much better spaced over two windows instead of one. The style of the kitchen just lends itself to the two more charming windows instead of the one more modern looking big one. Lastly, the wooden shelves look so much better shorter.

I'd put windows in the entire area--so 3 windows or a really big one

The sink doesn't need to be centered under two windows, centering it under A window is fine. Actually it's probably better than centering it under the mullion between 2.

Actually the sink doesn't need to be centered under anything. It needs to be where it functions best. Centering everything is one of those trite design dictates that's treated as if it is inviolate.

Obsessing over sink symmetry is silly! No one will notice or care.

Skip the shelves and add even bigger windows.

I am biased as the triple window unit in my kitchen is 10' 10" W x 5' 8" H. Also because my sink has a built-in drainboard the whole sink & drainboard opening is not centered on the middle window, but the faucet is.

I would do one nice wide window no open shelving and not really a big deal to have the sink where it is so that whole space filled with window

Thanks everyone! I cannot do 3 windows. The laundry room is behind the wall starting at the open shelves. I can only squeeze in 2 windows.

Then I would do 2 windows - natural light trumps symmetry
