Bathroom tile grout debate. chime in!

last year

Hello, got excited about this geometric tile floor for our main upstairs bathroom, but now we need to decide on a grout color. My husband loves the contrast and pattern and wants to go with a dark brown (will look similar as the picture with dark brown grout). I’m more on the fence and think a more muted look would appeal to future potential buyers. Would love advice, opinions, feedback!! Thank you 😊

Any ideas on wall paint colors would also be welcome.

What grout color is in the shower? Consider using same.

I don't like the tan (too yellow) or the dark brown. too dark.

take these out and take a same pic. lets see how these look

I'd also bring in some textured, natural elements. nice ceiling light, a sisal rug, wood shelves

    what's the vanity?

  • last year

We haven’t decided grout in the shower yet. Thought we would do something neutral to blend. Open to ideas here

    Vanity will be light wood

did you see my comment asking for more pics w/the other choices? post more pics w/those

nice vanity choice. I'd go w/matching wood shelves too.

    soft gold hardware

woven wood blind w/Simply White trim. and one of those paint colors on wall

    baseboards:

here are some other choices. left is Mapei color, right side is Custom.

    Following up on suggested options

Other options look too blue / gray

We had also planned on glass shower doors with black fixtures.

black fixtures will also work fine. try a slightly more modern look though.

i like this one. hard to tell. I don't think it's blue gray.

you want a mushroomy-taupe color. kind of like the paint colors I posted

BTW, who did the shower tile layout? shame on them for doing the vertical corner like that!

should have been full tiles w/the cut tiles toward the front (that will be hidden by the glass shower doors.

    what's going in the niche?

  • last year

Thanks for pointing that out. He just finished today, probably too late to fix but it’s definitely something I will notice now that you pointed it out.

We haven’t decided the niche but thought we could reuse floor tiles to create a diamond format? What do you think?

    yes, too late to fix.

I would use a color that matches those corner tiles as close as possible. this way you won't see the defect.

Grout does not go in the veritcal corners or along the tub/tile joint. that should always be 100% silicone caulk in the same color as your grout

for the niche, those floor tiles are too large. you won't see the design.

And as long as I'm picking on the tile installer, why didn't he enlarge the nice 2" on top and bottom to fit perfectly between those tiles? my numbr 1 pet peeve w/niches. and so easy to avoid. this blue one shows perfect spacing top and bottom.

here's mine. diff orientation, but I planned very carefully to get these fit on the top and bottom w/no cut tiles. obviously the right side couldn't be avoided.

BTW, this is Mapei Warm Gray.

what was the plan for the nice? what if you did a solid piece of quartz? are you doing a shelf?

on this one we chose a recycled glass mosiac (it looks green but it's white) w/a quartz shelf. this was a pre-made niche so that's why it didn't fit exactly. customer didn't want to spend the extra money for a man-made one.

does that floor tile come in anything smaller?

what about a penny round in a color to match? use a piece of quartz for the bottom shelf and sides?

Ahh this makes me so upset. Can I ask to be redone or reset? It’s clearly a flaw

i'm sorry. didn't post it to upset you. wasn't your fault. I just hate these tile installers that don't care about their work. It's common sense. in the spots that are visible you never do sliver cuts. you try and hide them or adjust your layout. what do the other corners look like?

make sure he knows to use the caulk (100% silicone. has to say 100%!) in the change of plane joints.

have you paid in full? don't. not yet. perhaps question as to why his layout was hurried and your aren't happy w/the sliver cuts that are so visible. maybe a reduction in cost would help? Once your doors are in, you prob won't see it.

what about these for the niche?

    https://www.bedrosians.com/en/product/detail/360-mosaic/

    or a plain taupe?

I like this herringbone in a mink color too

    https://www.bedrosians.com/en/product/detail/90-mosaic/

or if your subway tile comes in a smaller size or shape, you could use that.

post a pic dead straight on and i'll try to play w/it

get a 4" backsplash quartz piece (they sell them for the sink tops) in a mink color. use that for the shelf in the niche

  • last year

Not upset. Just disappointed I didn’t notice for myself. I’ll ask him tomorrow what can be done. Always need fresh eyes and I truly appreciate yours

i edited the comment to show some more pics for the niche. I really like the matching pennies from bedrosians. see if you like any of the others^

i'd find a quartz backsplash piece (4" is how they come) in the med to dark color that matches your tile. use it for the shelf in niche.

comes like this. (the dark one). I used this for a curb in a shower and the shelf in niche

otherwise, have him do your niche w/your tile on the sides like this one

see how the niche is perfectly framed w/in the tiles? and the corners aren't cut in small pieces? it's just a quality of workmanship that does this.

what is the name and color of the subways you used

Beth H. Did you not think that the homeowner would be upset when you point out flaws in their shower? I don't get it, what do you expect to be done now? If you want to be helpful, do a post about tile layout for people to look at prior to a job being done so they know what to ask of their tiler.

  • PRO

RNmom, so because a job is done but I see something that isn't worthy of a full payment, should I just say nothing and let the homeowner think she got fabulous work? and pass along her 'fabulous' tile guy to the next unsuspecting homeowner, which then ends up here on houzz w/a poorly done shower, "but they did my friends bathroom and it looked so good!" ??

come on. think. Anyone else reading this post can learn from this mistake. that's why we are here. this isn't FB where you post your things and people say, "oh how lovely". This is a professional forum where we call it like we see it.

It's called knowledge. So maybe next time she gets something done she will know. Or someone in her family, or friends will know. It's not a moot point.

I also told Caitlin that once the doors are up and it's grouted, it prob won't be as noticeable. what's done is done. But I'm not NOT going to say something. That's stupid.

hopefully she can point it out to the installer and get compensaition. I also told her ahead of time about the proper place for grout and caulk, which I'm SURE this tile guy wouldn't adhere too.

Caitlin, for the niche you could have him do the same subway tile, but your tile is large and he will have to make quite a few cuts. if you go this route, make SURE you have him do a dry layout on the ground so you can see what it's going to look like. if you don't like it, pick a smaller tile/mosiac in the same color. the geo tile is too large.

  • last year

Lots of reasons to bur or not buy a house ... and grout color is not one of them!

I'm going with neither color, although the brown looks like it has the right undertones to go with the tile. The pewter doesn't look like it has the right undertones and looks too yellow ... but that could be the camera not showing accurate colors.

Find a light color with the right undertones and then flip a coin. Winner gets to pick the grout!

  • last year

Beth, that was very unkind of you to point out flaws that cannot be fixed at this point . And you are dreaming if you think she will be compensated for them . You might want to put your ego in check !

Per the OP, Caitlin, to Beth:

"Always need fresh eyes and I truly appreciate yours"

If Caitlin wasn't upset at Beth's comments, why are you?

Beth is THE tile guru on Houzz, and spends a lot of time and effort helping out anyone having an issue with their tile, whether it be a design question or a technical installation question. I've seen many a tile dilemma where the OP states that they HOPE Beth will weigh in.

but it’s definitely something I will notice now that you pointed it out.

Ahh this makes me so upset. Can I ask to be redone or reset? It’s clearly a flaw

The corner is now bothering me so much. Looks rushed

Cailtlin asked for help with a grout color, not to have flaws pointed put that can not be fixed at this point with out starting over, which we all know isn't going to happen.

People go searching for Beth when they know that their job is a dumpster fire and are seeking validation.

  • PRO
    last year

No, they go to Beth when they want an expert's opinion on how to select and lay tile. As you can see, she doesn't mince words and doesn't validate dumpster fires.

I think her point was not that it is worth doing over, but that the OP could get some monetary consideration for the error.

  • last year

Grout color won't affect resale as long as it blends with the tile, which all those colors do. Pick a color you and your husband can live with. It's called compromise.

  • PRO
    last year

To the op- I assume the niche location was based on existing framing. Tile layout was chosen not to have vertical cuts flanking the niche where they would be incredibly obvious. The inside corner is fine. Not photoshop perfect but fine. Fill the niche with the wall tile- it’s not a feature and will soon have bottles etc in it.

Caitlin, that actually looks nice w/the darker grout. love the vanity w/the colors too.

RN momof2, you're putting way too much effort into it. stop already.

  • last year

The dark grout works nicely! I think that floor is a great statement.

Beth’s intent is always to be helpful. Getting some monetary compensation for a not-perfect installation is a damn good idea. And yes,the homeowners LEARN from Beth - both the ones that post and the others that read these dilemmas.

Caitlin- the corner isn’t terrible. But take Beth’s suggestion to request some compensation. And yes, it will be hidden when the doors are up.

Use the same tile for the niche. Blending into the walls is much nicer. It’s going to be stuffed with shampoo and conditioner bottles anyway.

  • last year

So it's ok to make someone feel bad by critiquing an issue that wasn't asked, in order to educate others ? To show off one's expertise? Especially an issue that can't really be fixed nor is likely to be compensated ?

  • last year

The OP thanked Beth for the information as they are now more educated for their next project, the master bathroom.

I have made comments like that before about a completed project and I usually start them with "this won't help the OP now, but for anyone starting a similar project these are things you want to look at ....".

Most people don't realize that those perfect bathroom photos on Houzz that they are using as inspiration didn't just happen by accident and usually involve an educated homeowner, a designer, an excellent contractor and a really good tile person.

Why shouldn't people share experience that will help others in the future?

  • last year

Caitlin, no one will notice! Things happen.

Side story: When we were having our tilees for our master bathroom in Florida, we were well aware of not putting odd squiggles tiles next to each other. DH was diligent is sorting and watching. Well, guess what? Two odd squggle are near each other! When I happen to look now, I just laugh.

Same with a floor tile that looks like a dust bunny. That time should have been used in the closet!

Again I laugh. We own rentals, we have renovated many of our own home, and while pros, we know a few things, but things happen.

You have lovely and unique space. Enjoy!
