Grafted Gallicas

Can anyone tell me where I can get Tuscany Superb grafted? I was hoping Palantine would have it, but it was not among the 2024 offerings (now sold out, anyway). Any suggestions?

It is one of my DH Tom's favorite roses, but I know well how it suckers.

My Tuscany Superb hardly suckers at all. It is very manageable and I've had it for decades. The one in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is more vigorous (gets more sun), but is by no means the most spreading rose in the garden, on the contrary. And it is rather low growing. Some people say this rose is not fragrant, but the Gallicas were developed for the fragrance of their dried or preserved petals, I understand, and not for enjoying cut or on the bush, though we may do so. I find it one of the most beautiful. Below, from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, June 2, 2022.

That is gorgeous! I was going to ask the same question. I’m moving to the Willamette Valley soon and can’t wait to grow some gallicas! i’m sorry that Paul stopped contributing-what a wealth of information. Am hoping to grow some of his too.

I have had gallicas on their own roots in the past that spread like crazy. Almost as bad as rugosas.

At my old house I had Tuscany Superb on multiflora, but of course I could not take it with me. I bought it the last year Pickering was still sending roses to the USA. How I miss Pickering! I am encouraged to learn that at least sometimes it is better behaved. The spot I have in mind for this one gets some late afternoon shade, so perhaps it will spread only modestly.

I will wait until fall to see what Palantine offers this year. Then if they don't have it available, I will get an own-root plant.

I think they vary in their tendencies to spread. Charles de Mills wants to take over the whole garden, for example, it is said. Of course, after many decades who can say what they will do?
