Art selection and placement

This is my laid back living room lounging corner. I need some art and some lighting for this area. The walls will be painted and the mirror and pieces of paper taken down and the rug fully laid out. Should I do a big gallery wall of fun art on both sides with 2-3 sconces? Two large 40x60 canvases with sconces? 40x40 square canvases? The couch is 120” on each side. Ceilings are 8’.

Thanks for any suggestions for my fun little nook.

I would go with large canvas art,

But, if this is a private/personal lounging area the gallery of personal art would be appropriate. Is this a TV room? where are you taking the photo from? an open door? or an open adjoining space?

I like these sconces but why are they so high? Lower them so you can read while seated with less overhead glare.

The gallery is sparse but I like the styling and use of color. Again, too high. Lower the art to enjoy while seated.

The photo is taken from the foyer looking in. There is a tv to the left of the picture just out of sight. My pelotons are just to the right of the picture. Not ideal but I’m making the best of the space I have in the house.

I think it is hard to do a gallery wall from scratch. Either you purchase an instant gallery wall/curated complete set, which is often a little boring an definitely not personal; or you do your own items (say, vacation photos) kind of formulaically with matching frames; or you have to make a lot of individual decisions purchasing artwork and deciding on frames. Or you wait patiently to collect things over time.

I would buy one large piece for one side of the sofa, and for the other wall wait patiently to populate an expanding gallery wall on the other side.

You could install track lighting or picture lights for the artwork. I think these would provide better illumination for the art than sconces would. Then do table or floor lamps for reading light.

Wall art personalizes your space. It should bring you joy and reflect your personality.

Without knowing you all we can do is suggest pictures or ideas that are either things we love or that are generic hotel type pieces that work for any space without considering who you are.

    What are your favorite colors?

What types of art do you like?

Do you have any passions that should be reflected in the art?

My home is filled with wildlife art and nature art. I love wildlife and nature.

My sister has almost no traditional art in her home, but has things that are interesting and have a story.

This had belonged to my dad.

These are three ceiling panels from an insane asylum that was torn down.

This was a gift from her husband on their 40th anniversary. It was the song that was their first dance at their wedding.

There are just so many choices

Beverly's wall layout looks good. It is the right scale of artwork. If you don't love the idea of a 3D piece then do two pieces of artwork.

I could enjoy this space with the carpet and the right paint color and art.

Then again , my last home had red walls in the family room and kitchen.

Pretty bold color, balances the boldness of the couch. I'd suggest some personalisation. What are your kids favorite animals? It's a lot of wall, Play with bold big sizes. Add some plants, real or not to ground the space.

Ok - the rug is a 9x12 (currently folded under in this pic). I bought this size because the hardwood is stained badly in several spots and I wanted to cover it up as best I could until we can refinish all the floors in the house. I have my pelotons to the right of the furniture since there is nowhere else to put them in the house. So it’s a combo teen video game hangout space/workout room that I’m trying to make look fun since you see it right when you enter the house. I love bold colors and funny artwork and am a free spirit. I was going to paint the room a pink or coral kind of like the mock up pictured above but I’m waiting to decide on the color based on the art/pillows. I never thought about the 3D art so I’m pondering that since there are a lot of fun options out there. Thanks for all the feedback so far! I’m out of my wheelhouse here with design stuff so I love all your suggestions!!!

Would you be open to trying a different rug? It looks like the current one is a blanket over a rug? We might suggest looking at some alternative options to what you currently have. Take a moment to look through these designs with rug ideas for you:
