Desperately need bedroom advice

Desperately need advice for my bedroom. I just painted it BM Edgecomb Grey and the dressers and nightstands are staying, but other than that it is a blank slate. I need a headboard, lamps, curtains, a mirror over long dresser, bedding, and possibly a rug. I’m open to all ideas. Im stressing and don’t know where to even start.

    Here's one idea...

The bench at the foot of the bed has to go because of the color. Then pick bedding with some personality.

Yeah, it’s going as is the round table and headboard.

Here I like that they chose an upholstered headboard in the same gray as the nightstands. I also like the buff and brass accents. If you like this look, you could look at a gold or brass framed mirror for above your dresser. Side note - would it be possible to paint the tall white dresser a similar gray as your other furniture?

We are hoping to replace it with the matching grey but it’s out of stock right now with an unclear date when it will be back in stock.

Is there PLEEEEEZE another color for a bedroom besides gray?

You are replacing carpet, with gray carpet?

Please do not bother, and use an engineered hardwood or LVP with a nice big area rug?!

What is the size of your bed, is it on the best wall? You have screen shots, not JPEGS, therefore hard to see what is going on. Are the dresser and side table dark gray or a dark wood?

I’m not replacing the carpet. I was going to add an area rug. How do I do jpeg pics? I just took them with my phone

I love gray bedrooms when done well .But I always start with bedding I love that sets the style and color scheme for a bedroom IMO Beige and gray would be for me the bottom choice out of a 1000. Yes to jpeg shots and honestly just show the whole space in as few as possible posted here in a comment. My advice right now is go find bedding you absolutely love and come back with thta choice in a pic. I garee no carpet and a nice either hardwood if that is what in in the house now or a nice neutral LVP.

    First:

Your phone pic first goes to your photo library, then you post it. Example......

This pic came out of my "library" on 1 phone 13, will blow up on a click.

    You're using as "screen shot"?

    Wrapped views · More Info

    Second:

Don't put an area rug atop the existing edge to edge carpet_ a waste of money, hard to vacuum, and it will crawl and be lumpy no matter what you do.

The rush to paint in Edgecomb? Maybe not the best idea, OR.....do an LVP floor with a nice big area rug, a much better investment. No...NOT gray, a nice light wood tone.

Don't buy a "headboard" only. Buy a wood platform and an upholstered headboard, or buy an entire bed!

The paint........if you must keep the very beige carpeting? Embolden the Edgecomb to darker! Don't be chicken. All four walls. Yes, a paint do over.

    Maybe Gauntlet!

Now? You have enough oomph!!!! , enough contrast on the walls to do something like this for a bed....and still harmonize with that carpeting!

Neutral rooms, and especially those that mix a warm and cool neutral need thought. Texture, contrast......

The most robust way to get started:

Decide on a complementary color combination and article below will be very helpful. You can go monochromatic or note the many color combinations suggested.

    https://postcardsfromtheridge.com/2023/08/benjamin-moore-edgecomb-gray-hc-173.html/

Pour through Edgecomb bedroom inspiration pictures to help with your colors’ decision, headboard, bedding, lighting, and accessory ideas. Save all your favorites and you’ll see a pattern/define the style you are drawn to.

Depending on your carpet’s pile and weight of rug, a rug might be a nuisance. Choose the bed/headboard and bedding first as they will drive the other decisions. Suggest large art above headboard to draw the eye down/create more balance and experiment with lamp sizes as proportions will be important. To get lots of ideas around accessories, search by the item.

Same idea as above but in the neutral beige tones. You can also add accent pillows with colour if you like that look.

I like the navy with this

Did not mean to post that 5 times. 😬

As far as the edge comb gray I chose that bc I thought it was neutral and it actually looks more beige to me than gray.

Also, I have zero design experience and not a natural eye for it AT ALL, so all of your ideas are appreciated

    last modified: 2 years ago

The walls have a green undertone. The carpet has a pink undertone. I would not add another color like navy to the mix. Stick with neutrals.

You've learned a valuable decorating lesson. Many neutrals don't naturally play nice together. You can use warm beiges and cool grays in the same room but it's harder to pull off than decorating with one undertone.

If you spread the colors around the room with patterns and accents, it will come together.

See if you can find a linen slipcover to fit over your headboard (returnable of course). It may save you money and hassle.

So is it the dressers that are cool?

@tracefloyd These things are what my eye does not see so thank yiu

Aim to connect/complement the givens, including the carpet (accessories play a big role). Suggest a modern, casual bed/headboard and basically, the room in general.

Maureen, so not a headboard like this?

    last modified: 2 years ago

The dressers look like a warm gray on my screen. I don't see any blue in it...almost espresso? Hard to tell by a photo.

But they are the coolest tone in the room. Look how nice the warm green and pink tones look next to it.

We have a lot of color blindness in my family and I notice that you keep saying you can't see what we see. Is it possible that you have slight color blindness?

Or it could be you just don't have a decorating eye. Which is totally OK. Everyone is different, that's what makes the world interesting.

Deegw, LOL, no I’m not colorblind. I just feel that way when people talk about warm vs. cool and l, no, I do not have a decorator’s eye hence why I’m desperately looking for guidance.

Tracefloyd, I don’t know if this helps

I don't see any headboard proposed in that shade of gray.

At this point you have many excellent and informed proposals and inspos for your room. They all work in their own way. Study them...see what they have in common. That will help you shape your vision.

Then choose your favorite and copy it as close as you can.

    last modified: 2 years ago

The dresser I still can't tell by the photo but it looks great with the paint and carpet. Consider it a cool tone since it is the coolest tone in the room by comparison.

I just realized I mentioned a color theory...the eye perceives color based on its surroundings. That's why it is so frustrating. That's why they say test everything first...and samples.

It will be hard to find a gray to go with the dressers. Wood stains are unique and tricky to coordinate. Easier to let them be the only gray in the room and just use a picture frame or throw pillow in that color.

This is a good article about undertones. I like the hint about looking at an item next to something that is a pure version of the color. I think that holding a piece of white paper next to an item would also help make the undertone pop.

Looks like you like tufted headboards…personally I’m not a fan and the curve feels a bit dainty; but it’s really a personal taste. Maybe a darker grey with a straight design - let the bedding be the focal point. Try Amazon and Wayfair.

Maureen, I get what you mean about the headboard. I’ll keep looking. I do like the pic you included. So beige shades for bedding?

    last modified: 2 years ago

Suggest white or linen sheets, some dark grey and a color to pull in the carpeting. Look on line for combinations you like and test to help you decide. If you have a HomeSense or Marshalls, they have great bedding/cushion choices at very reasonable prices.

Look.............you have Edgecomb walls. Ikea nightstands and dresser?

Bed......the ENTIRE BED and not the cheap looking, overdone tufts and please go dark and don't fight the walls and bedside tables!!. More THIS tuft, and.....This one below

    https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/willa-arlo-interiors-candler-upholstered-platform-bed-with-wingback-w100424919.html?piid=2103532801

It works, it looks like a lot richer than the others. In Black.

Now.....look at the bedding on there, and how the bed is made. You can do that. It is NOT as hard as you are making it.

I added a bench at the foot of the bed, a deep cocoa.. because you have the rug you have!

    presto............

Bed IS THE BEGINNING. Or ditch the wall paint.: )

239.00 for the bed, in King and 259.00 for the "leather" bench

Get a quilt and sham set in white ( Quince , google it) Start with that and add, its 219.00 in king

Thank you! That looks nice. The reason I was staying away from a platform bed is bc the bedside tables are 31” and I thought they would be too high next to a lower platform bed.

  • PRO

    Hon....: )

I wouldn't be married to those bedside tables.: )

And despite they match your dresser, that isn't necessary, either.

The bed is a lot more important, and it's final mattress height depends your mattress.

So what color tables do you think to tie that all together?

  • PRO

It's the size, and you don't need to MATCH the dresser, but it needs to look good against that wimpy Edgecomb paint! And the carpet you aren't changing.

    24" high below..., 22 w and 16.5 deep and 200.00 bucks

I think the nightstands work color wise and lamps will give them more character. Be sure to tie into your mirror choice.

Suggest putting your budget, time and effort into the bed, mirror, and accessorizes (test/return if need be - pro’s do the same).

If anything, based on size of new headboard you may find they feel too small. Don’t rush into decisions and suggest looking for inspiration on Houzz and Pinterest, as nothing beats visuals.

So just using what o have around the house to kinda see the vision. I swear in real life thecwall does not look so green as it does in these pics.

Do you really want grey and beige and ivory? All neutrals, whether cool or not…it looks rather dull and boring. If that is what you would like, then go for it. Do consider richer textures that will give your room some life. Otherwise, I suggest that you look for patterns in bedding that might link these neutrals with a color. Or find art that has some color other than neutral colors of grey and beige in it, too. Something to add some life to your space.

    Look again please?

If you are married to the givens? You have to work with the givens...... or you want a great room or you don't: )

Which yes, may include letting go of the nightstands for lower.

Neutral doesn't mean EASY. It never did.

    From up above......and yesterday

24 high and not your 31.

It's often a case of you just need.....more: ) to make it all work

Where I’m at now. Was planning to send headboard back but hubby likes it and discovered it was going to pain to ship back. Now looking for artwork for above the bead and throw pillows.

Oh, also drapes. Have temporary up now, unsure on color to get

I like the new gray headboard but the carpet is so distracting.

@tracefloyd Yes, I know but that won’t get changed until next year 😕

No, I mean it looks like the carpet needs a good shampooing.

Lay your pillows flat so as to see the headboard. It is a look that is trending...I found a couple of examples:

These have your colors and are calming for a bedroom.

Your headboard is not very high. I presume you show 4 pillows in your picture so instead of leaning them against the headboard, stack them 2 x 2 on top of each other and place the accent pillows in front (see sketch below). You need accents in the room that stand out, everything seems to blend in with one another. I show a lime green as an accent with white & different shades of gray, brass task lamps, narrow striped lime and white curtains, and artwork that works with this colour scheme. Run your throw across the bed instead just laying it on the corner. You seem to have room at the foot of the bed, I show a black bench with a natural fibre seat.

    It's hard to help ......

The carpet is......... just not good. It isn't good with the wall color, the headboard "hubby likes" and was "a pain to return". What did you pay for it? Put it on Facebook Marketplace?

I wouldn't spend another nickel on anything until I was rid of the carpet. Hardwood, LVP.....EVEN a different WTW broadloom. ... Virtually anything would be better. Look at the pic and one is reminded of a dog still damp from a swim in the pond ! ?

Design is first about solutions to problems. : )

Nothing will look right until it is gone and best let the headboard go with it. Wait. Save more money and get a room you really like.
