This is the vault at the end of the world where all the existing seeds on the planet are kept. It is located in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway, about 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole. Opened in 2008, this underground warehouse is designed to preserve 4.5 million seeds of crop plants from around the world, acting as insurance against the loss of genetic biodiversity caused by natural disasters, conflict and climate change. So, in case the world is ever destroyed, and you are the only survivor, you know where to go.

Here we are again. It is still hot. Very hot. But I am getting rain. Finally. I have had a small zoo aviary out back with my flocks, but finally the geese have finally flown off. Five of them were grounded here with regular wing maintenace. OMG hahaha it is Sunday.

Now it is Monday. I know what day it is today. And now the geese are back. So is my life. Even with rain I still have a lot of watering to do. For some reason some of the hostas like to make umbrellas with their leaves. I have been removing the spent scrapes but I am keeping the seeded ones. I am just letting the bees do the work and it will be fun to start this fall.

What do you do when a plant gets too big for you?

My garage cleaning up came out marvelous. I am so pleased. No more crab walk. And I can get to things again. So tomorrow I have a lineup of cacti to repot. Right now, I do not move hostas, it is just too hot for them. It is too hot for me.

So Sweet.

Hahaha paula, when your hostas get too big, you ship them to me. 😁 The field guide joke really got me! I have read about the seed vault before…..interesting concept, but who will be around if there’s a catastrophic event??

Ok, onto gardening…..today it’s 84 F and hazy. It’s abit of a relief from the sunny hot weather we’ve been having. And now it’s been dry for the last week. Things in the back yard which is mostly sunny are looking good with the exception of some burn on hostas. My perennials that I planted last year are in full swing and looking good. My hostas on the side yards are looking pretty good. I seems that the earwigs weren’t in those areas as much as the front.
I am really disappointed and overwhelmed with what needs to be done in the front. Almost every hosta has significant earwig damage and I have a number that look like they’re on their last leg……small, brown leaves……they have too be dug up, roots removed and potted or replanted.
I’m already worried about the overwintering process. Do you tip them on their side like when they’re outside or leave them upright? Do you give any hydration to them? Is an unheated garage in SE Wisconsin going to be cold enough? Yikes! I probably should do my own post about that, but that’s what’s on my mind……

Many hostas are in bloom for me now, Ambrosia, Blazing Saddles, Wide Brim, Fragrant Blue, So Sweet, Sum & Substance, Nigrescens and others. These are the late bloomers.

My foot is feeling fine, but believe it or not, the ankle still is swollen. Last Saturday I went on a garden tour with a friend and really enjoyed that

Paula, that hosta looks great. Go figure why my hostas here starting to look very tired....

Seed saving is mandatory for me. I brought some tomato seeds with me years back from Ukraine. Exactly where war started 10 years ago. If we lucky I will give them back to families that want to grow them after war. Some tomatoes were family heirlooms and some were from local hybridizer. I have shared them with tomato growers here as well and grow them for garden swap my buddy and I run for close to 20 years.

I went to NIHS see summer meeting, Mark Zilis was presenting his report on annual hosta convention in MA. I find him to be great presenter and he did not disappoint. Next year convention is in Peoria IL so local IL WI, IA and IN peeps anyone wants to meet in person?

It is raining here again. I got first tomatoes but they taste flat. Rain washed everything out.

I am hoping we get lucky in August with gentle heat and no rains.

I was asked about parentage on my seedling from some local hosta people. I lost my seedling bed tags during house move so now I have "seedlings" and "seedlings of the seedlings". I do not know if it is possible to calculate parentage back.

To my mind this seedling has some Galaxy genes in it. They bloom almost at same time.

As for overwintering in pots I had mixed results. I would not pot anything that can not be recovered in pots to overwinter.

I over-winter over three hundred potted hostas, but my method is a little extreme for most people as I bury them in my garden an inch or two under the soil, then wait for the ground to freeze solid (sometimes as late as February), then cover them with a foot of leaves. I lost two last year that I didn't think were going to make it anyway. I try to dig them up and put them in my portable greenhouse around tax day but they were two weeks early this year.

never heard of the seed vault!..
I had a surgeon’s appointment today..1 year follow up for my shoulder surgery..I’m doing as well as can be expected and don’t need to see him for 2 years..
I created a vignette (my name for it) with a piece of broken urn, a rock and 3 small volunteer hosta..I started to plant a large hosta but couldn’t - roots..but I could get the small ones in..

summer is going fast..my to do list is still big..
my succulent garden isn’t as perfect as it was..one of them is shrinking and has a brown spot 🙁..

I like the "trail guide" thing. We do a fair amount of primitive trail hikk ining and the DW is always concerned that we might be or get lost. I've been turned around a time or two but so far have managed to get out of the woods.

Debra - I think we are in the same zone with like weather conditions. The only thing I do to over winter is cover the pots outdoors with 8 - 12 inches of shredded leaves. I seldom loose any and if I do, they were small and shaky to begin with.

I've been cutting off all the flower/seed scapes that are past their benefit to birds, bees and butterflies. Now the aromatic ones are starting to bloom, love the pure white ones and their fragrance.
