Hi! A chandelier should be at least 7 ft away from the floor when hanging on an open floor, allowing enough headroom for people to move around freely without the risk of hitting their heads. If you have a dining table or a kitchen island, it should be 36 inches above table top/counter.

I appreciate the comment but do not see how this advice applies to my picture which clearly shows a 2 story great room in which the ceiling height is 20 feet.

How high is it from the floor now?

I do not have the exact dimensions on that. I personally just feel that it visually looks too high, but this is my first house with a two story room so I'm trying to figure out if it's just me.

A chandelier over a table in an 8 foot room is 5/8 of the height off the floor so proportionally that would be 12.5' above the floor in a 20' high room. I don't think I would want it halfway, cutting the room in half.

We had originally said we wanted the chandelier to be centered between the two top windows, but to me it looks higher than that. My research came back with the same approximate info, that it should be 13' above the floor.
