Basement renovation

My husband and I just bought our house a few months ago and we changed the floor to this gray wood looking porcelain tile. There is still wallpaper and paneling and this bar. What can we do to the wall the paneling in the bar to make it look refreshed and updated without spending an exorbitant amount of money.

You’ll have to paint the paneling.

The flooring is now the “boss” of the room - everything needs to go with it. Paint the paneling, remove the wallpaper and paint the walls the same color as the paneling. The cabinets also need to be painted - could be the same as the walls or 1 or 2 shades darker. Nine of your wood works with the floors.

You will need to keep that ledge ( there is probably par of the foundation there ). I would remove all the paneling and wall paper. It's cutting the height in half. Keep the piece of wood for the top of the ledge - stain or paint it a darker finish - maybe a charcoal or navy.

If your budget can handle it - I would take out the bar area so it can get new updated cabinets and design. Otherwise paint it something fun or bold. Get rid of the mirrors and all those glass shelves and make a nicer shelving set up for the glassware ( although I prefer them in cabinets so you don't have to clean them every time you want to use them ). Get some nice wine racks to mount on the wall for the wine bottles ( standing upright is not the best way to store them ).

You can do this in stages if that is easier on your budget!

Take your time, think things all the way through before taking the next step. Get samples of any color or tile or cabinet you are thinking of getting and bring it into the space. It's all about complimenting the floor now .

    Good luck!

Remove the wallpaper. Paint the whole room the same color. Paint the cabinets the same color as the rest of the room. Remove the mirrors and shelves. This will give you a fresh clean area. Hang some art. I'd remove the bookshelves to the right of the TV. It makes the set up feel more crowded.

Everything you have is beige/tan/brown and you chose a gray porcelain, which doesn't complement all the other elements. Is there a reason you went with that?

The gray trend lasted around 12 years, but it got promoted to the "dated" category starting in 2021.

Since your floor now runs the show, I would paint the wainscotting (wall panelling) white. Either you replace the wallpaper with something that looks like grasscloth (look alike isn't expensive) or paint the wall the same colour as the wainscotting but in a matte finish. I suggest you get a proper wall unit for the TV (the one shown isn't expensive). For the bar area, if the top is wood leave as is but paint all the bottom section and doors in the same white as the wainscotting. To update to section above the bar, remove the mirror and shelves, continue with the same wallpaper (or paint), and install wood shelves with black industrial brackets. See the look below...

Cozy room. It will look refreshed with paint on the walls and panelling. Not sure why you would need to remove the mirrors. A bit too retro maybe?

Remove the wallpaper and paint the panelling and walls both the same soft white. get a new rug with a pattern with both grey and beige to tie the floor and couch together. consider removing the bar as funds allow.

Panelling when painted will add a nice architectural look to the room and will improve everything if it’s the same colour as the walls. Removing the panelling could be an expensive venture I would go with paint first. Go very light on your paint and paint some large sample boards to test your colours with the gray floor. You might be able to get away without painting all of cabinets I would do the walls and panelling first.

The easiest and most budget-friendly way to refresh your bar paneling is to paint it a light, neutral color like white or pale gray. For a more updated look during a basement renovation, you could also add peel-and-stick wallpaper or a few accent shelves or artwork. Even just painting the paneling and updating the trim can make a big difference without spending much.
