Exterior Paint HELP!!

last year

Hello! I'm seeking advice from professionals who have experience with paint and exterior design.

We've had a bit of a mix-up with our paint colors. While I love the Greek Villa white we've chosen for our house, I'm struggling with the stark black trim around the fascia and windows.

I'm considering adding wood corbels to match our espresso-stained door, but I'm unsure if it would be better to paint the trim to match the house, including the fascia. My husband and our contractor think the current look is cool and modern, but I find it a bit harsh and am aiming for a more cottage-style aesthetic.

We live in a diverse forested neighborhood, with homes ranging from the 1970s to new builds.

I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to achieve a cohesive look. Please share constructive feedback, and kindly refrain from leaving unhelpful comments.

Thank you so much for your help!

I agree about the black. Your windows are black too?

You have lots of roof showing, so you probably need to test various colors to see how they work with the roof, siding, brick and windows/doors.

I suspect you are also reacting to the architecture and not only the colors.

the black is pretty dark, is it SW Tricorn? SW Iron Ore would be a softer black with your Greek Villa. that said, I prefer the dark trim to the light shown above.

you could try repainting w/something softer. Wrought Iron, iron Ore, Iron Mountain, Black Fox.

or, just wait until the landscaping is done.

some wood gable trusses might look nice

Suggestion from S.W. using Greek Villa with a dark roof.

Siding, fascia, soffits, trim is all Greek Villa. I agree with you that the black trim is what is spoiling the look of the exterior. Forested area...what about the green for the front door, instead of a black?

Your house is lovely. The black is a bit harsh and is taking away from the beauty, I too agree with others a softer color around those windows. I also think the warm looking greenish yellow hue of Greek Villa (LRV 84) on the house is not the best color with that roof. Maybe if there was more sunlight coming down or your home faced south. But my guess is that your house faces north and the is very shaded by trees. If you are keeping the creamy Greek Villa you need a trim that is going to work with the black but lift the space. Brighten it up a bit. And once your landscape is complete you will see it transform.

Notice the green landsaping and the lack of trees brightens this space. The window trim is much lighter.

The two large windows that jut out, and the roof material above them, are of a much more modern vein than the rest of the house. I think that is part of what you are reacting to in addition to the black looking harsh. Yes, paint them the same color as the body of the house. Then see how you feel. Adding black mullions to them that echo the mullions on the front door may help bridge their modern look with the more cottage vibe you want.

Adding corbels, at this point is going to look like - well, last minute add ons that don't make much sense.

Hire someone who can do a fast and good visualization of the black parts painted the body color, and include the addition of some landscaping along the lines of what you will actually use. It will save you money.
