Now that it’s torn out, how many steps is it between the fridge and the sink in the new layout? NKSB recommends the kitchen triangle be 13 - 26 feet with each leg being 4 - 9 feet. It’s not about conventionality it’s about convenience.

Susan L thanks for your concerns. I had a friend who was a commercial kitchen designer over here the other day, and even she conceded that due to the windows and structural issues, she would place the fridge on the far wall. As she pointed out, may older homes, especially European homes, have the fridge in an entirely different room.

It was far more important to us to open the space up to get light into the house, improve airflow for our heat pumps, and make the corridor easier to navigate given the need for a wheelchair or walker.

It isn't perfect, but with a sink near the fridge, prep will be ok, and the groceries will be easier to put away as the fridge will be closer to the entry. From fridge to range, it will be 11 feet or so. But with a great view!
