My mother could crochet beautifully. When DD, the first grandchild, was born, Mother made her a beautiful ”carriage set” - hat, jacket (Mother called it a sacque), booties, and blanket. Regretfully, it is not a skill she passed along to either of her daughters.

I love the color combination. It's just gorgeous! I also think having a group of people sitting with you while working on it sounds interesting. My neighbor goes on quilting retreats. Do they have crochet or knitting retreats? That would be awesome too.

nicole, yes they do have knitting retreats and even cruises IIRC. One gal I know went on one to learn double knitting. But it's not been something I've pursued. I'm happy to sit with my group of ladies once a week. We are very supportive of each other emotionally and craft-wise, and share a lot of stories and humor too.

Project Linus (remember Linus from Peanuts who always had a blanket?) provides blankets to children in need or in traumatic situations for comfort be it emergency room, chronic care, or traumatic domestic situations. Our local Jo-Ann's has a drop box where you can just drop them off and the gal who runs our district for Project Linus picks them up on a regular basis, so it's all very easy.

Beautiful, Annie! I had shoulder surgery on 7/25 on my dominant (left) side. Later today I’m going to try some crochet. I’m tired of sitting around reading and playing iPad games. 😁

Your work is beautiful, no matter what it is! I took knitting lessons in a group which was fun and we made a knit cap. Life got in the way and I didn't continue which was a mistake. Now I need to start all over again. Every time I see one of your creations, it motivates me to begin again.

I think all knitters are very talented but their choice of yarn colors is usually problematic at best. Annie, that blanket is beautiful and the colors are just lovely. As one of our kid’s teachers (Miss O’Callahan) was fond of saying, Jesus has a crown waiting for you in heaven. Your work on behalf of those marginalized children is surely being noted by The Great Listkeeper. Or at least Santa!

I have spent hours over the last couple of days searching diamond crochet stitches, but none of them look like this stitch. And I'm not sure I could figure it out by looking at your photos. Thanks!

I'll warn you that I didn't pay attention to which row was which so rather than straight edges, they got a little wonky. It has a kludgy thing about which diamonds need the 2 dc ends and which ones don't. I just did my best and wasn't too fussy as it was close enough esp after I added the border.

You might call your local hospital. There are other organizations that do similar things that the hospitals will know about. Project Linus is just one. Also nursing homes are often looking for lap blankets for people who are in wheel chairs....you might check with them. If there is a local yarn group (we have them in our sr center and our libraries) they might be able to help and you might enjoy joining one of them!

Years ago we had neighbors who knitted watch caps for, I think it was the merchant marines. I thought that was rather niche.

A card was just sent from Project Linus informing my husband that a donation was sent in memory of his Mother. All I could think about was this thread.

Rho Dodendron, Some make fleece blankets. There's a round cutter that is a perforator blade that makes holes every bit. You run it along the edge of the fleece and then can crochet or embroider a border on the blanket through the cut holes.
