IMO island lighting is task lighting so any fixture you do should have down lights not up lights like you get with lanterns usually. Post the light you want but usually in a 9 ' ceiling the length of the fixture is not an issue . It is nice to aslo see your space to understand why lanterns at all.

No one can really recommend an actual pendant…you have to decide what size you are comfortable with and suits your kitchen overall. If you provide that info and a picture of your kitchen you’ll receive more relevant advice.

Highly recommend doing your own search on Houzz and Pinterest to get a sense of styles you are drawn (size can come later) and take into consideration if kitchen is an open concept (larger might work better), sight-lines, and if task or only ambient lighting is needed. If you choose one with a chain, you can play around with height.
