Bathroom Design Help

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice on my hall bathroom that I'm finishing the renovation on.

Quick background. I have always liked the color combination of blue and darker wood which was the reasoning behind the tile floor and wood vanity. I saw the white/black subway tile at a friend’s house with a similar combo and thought it looked nice, which is why I went that route as well (and it was affordable). I initially completed the look with black accessories (shower head/towel holder/faucet, ect). It had farmhouse vibes which I wasn’t opposed to. After those were in, I looked at everything and realized that the bathroom had a cold/sterile/uninspired feel (didn’t feel homey enough) and needed some pop. I decided to add a few gold elements (gold on the light fixture, gold mirror, drawer and vanity pulls, and potentially shower curtain rings and picture frame above toilet). I'm still not sure how all this ties together and am struggling to complete the look as well as finding additional items.

A few questions below

- Regarding the vanity top, I had envisioned it being as pure white as I could find since I thought that would pair best with the color of the wood vanity. I decided to go with quartz and thought it looked very white when I bought it in the store (I picked the whitest they had). However, when I installed it, it looks very much like a cream color (which I don’t like) and realized that it’s very hard to find super white vanity tops unless they are unnatural stone (which I was hesitant to do since I wanted to go the nicer route). I thought about doing Carrara White Marble but don’t know how the greyish look would tie in with the rest of the bathroom. Any thoughts on the vanity top replacement?

- In general, I'm struggling with the color scheme of everything looking too white. The subway tiles, Walls (ultra-pure white) and cabinet each have a different shade of white. I initially thought that I should get a shower curtain and bath mats (one for shower and one for vanity) that were white with navy blue accents but those have been hard to find (especially a long shower curtain) and didn’t know how they would go with the rest of the color scheme. Don’t know if its worth painting the cabinet (and if so, what color?)

- One idea I had was to put some backsplash behind the wall with the mirror but couldn’t decide on which color (light blue?) or style (hexagons?) that would go well with the general aesthetic.

So I'm looking for any and all advice on overall theme and paint colors and accents (shower curtain, bath matts, picture frame(s), cabinet and vanity pulls, backsplash, ect). If anyone could send links to any items, that would be helpful as well (I feel like I've scoured the internet without much luck on a lot of this stuff – shower curtains and bath matts in particular).

(I also know that I probably need another can light closer towards the door (feels a bit shadowy), move the vanity plug closer to the mirror wall (in the way of hand towel) and move the drawer pulls farther apart (especially If I stick with those).

Thanks

i think adding in some texture and softness will help a lot - for your shower curtain, Signature Hardware has shower rods that you can cut to length, I would hang it almost to the ceiling and get a custom shower curtain on Etsy that falls just above the floor - it will look much more luxurious than the standard size

I am sure some others will chime in with good ideas

It's a very nice bathroom, and the only thing missing are accessories. Shower curtain, towels, perhaps a small colorful indoor/outdoor rug, vanity top accessories. You also might consider painting the walls a color other than white or neutral, one that you can pull from the rug or shower curtain.

Your choices are good and you just need to soften with accessories. I wouldn’t add anymore tile or it will start to look overdone. A shower curtain (extra long) in a soft white with some texture would be my pick unless you’re going with glass door. I’d do some shelves above the toilet to help balance that area. Then just towels. Towels, a soap dispenser and some greenery in the space will pull it all together.

Thanks Diana. Do you have an idea what the kind of vanity top is in the first picture? Is that carrara white marble thats more on the whiter side? Also, any thoughts on a good color for the accessories?

You're welcome B Shil. It's very difficult to determine exactly what that vanity top is from a photo. It could be Carrara marble or a marble lookalike quartz. Or something else....

You can click on the "more information" and go to the designer's page on Houzz, and then ask the question. You may or may not get an answer, but it's worth a shot.

I don’t think your vanity top is a problem. Have you considered adding a hint of color to your walls to relieve the whiteness of the space? Before I would do that, however, I would add towels, a rug, ART on the wall over the toilet (no frame, just a piece on stretched canvas). Your room has all the wonderful bones that you need. Your relief of the all black with some gold is a very nice touch. So…get some pretty towels, the shower curtain, some art. And…you are done! Nice job.

Pat yourself on the back. You've done a beautiful job. You are noticing the mismatched whites because you haven't accessorized and there is nothing breaking up the space between them. They truly are fine and you don't need to change, paint, and please not tile backsplash. Your vanity already has a backsplash.

Hardware - I like the black and gold combo. Keep all faucets and shower items black. Get gold/brass towel bar, tall cabinet handles. Maybe keep hand towel and hook black? I'd do a black curtain rod and rings.

Put small piece of art above the toilet and frame it in gold, or black, or even wood to match your vanity. (I can't stand an unframed stretched canvass. Looks cheap to me.)

While a tall shower curtain is really classy, your subway tile is nice and I might not mind it peaking out.

I love a great rug in a bathroom but not in one this small. It will look like clutter or like you are covering up a floor you don't like. Your floor is great. Save the bathmat for when you are showering. Keep the floor clear otherwise.

I don't know your tastes so it is hard to recommend a good combination of towels, shower curtains, art, and soap pump. Here is one suggestion:

Blue Green Combo - Would look great with your wood, floors, black accents.

    Blue and wood color combos

RH shower curtain comes in extra long

Is this a new build? Do you have bathroom accessories you can steal from another bathroom at this very moment, hang towels, put countertop accessories out, shampoo in the shower, a mat on the tub, tape a piece of wrapping paper or a paper bag up as art above the toilet. You will immediately start to feel better about this space!

What exactly is the floor tile? Is it a very dark slate dark blue or is it charcoal?

I ask as you mentioned the navy!

Paint the walls! Too stark a white in there, on my monitor.

You added the gleam...which is not so farmhouse: )

So? Keep going! "American white " on the walls

Navy....and black? A luxury designer fave with a hit of gleam

That art? Indigo background : )

    Monogram bath mat, why not?

It looks like you have real slate tile on your floors. I have Brazilian slate floors in one of my bathrooms - and real carrara marble goes very well with it. However, I don't think that you need to change your countertop (and I love real marble) - seems like a waste of money.

I've seen similar slate tile with white subway tiles + SW Sea Salt on the walls - it looked really nice (along with other accessories to warm up the space a bit).

I also like the indigo color that Jan has suggested on the canvas print above - I think a dark navy with your black fixtures would look great!
