Bosch 800 or Miele Dishwasher for Remodel

We are about to remodel our kitchen. The finalists for dishwasher are the Bosch 800 Series, Miele 5xxx, or Miele 7xxx.

The Bosch seems to be a good product for the price point. We've owned Bosch dishwashers years ago, and we were always pleased.

But, we own many great Miele products (laundry, vacuum) that we love. So we are strongly considering the Miele dishwashers.

The 7000 has some features that seem helpful:

AutoOpen at the end of the cycle
The "I'm running" indicator light on the floor.
China / Crystal Cycle
Lights on the interior
Potential of an AutoDos model for better washing, ease of use.

he 5000 seems like all the same components, just fewer enabled features.

I honestly don't know how much I'd miss the benefits listed above if we saved a few hundred bucks on a 5000 series.

But if we end up owning the dishwasher for the next 15-20 years, why not get the better model?

I own two Miele dw in two different houses buying the second one a few months ago. My original dw is 9 years old and no issues.. Both of my daughters have the 800 series Bosch with crystal dry and I have used theirs extensively. Both Miele and Bosch clean great and are quiet. The Miele will be more expensive but will have some nice features like the auto open door, intereior lighting (on some models), water softener etc. I think both have a china/crystal cycle. I prefer the Miele cutlery tray over the bosch as well as the layout of the bottom rack. I find it cumbersome to fit larger pots/pans into the Bosch. If you have not - I would take several of you dishes/pots/pans to a store that has both on display and see which one loads your items the best and you can also see any other look/feel differences that your value.

I have autodos on my newer Miele - I like it, but after my 7 discs run out that they gave me - not sure if I want to pay their high price. There are Youtube videos on how folks have refilled them but not sure its worth the trouble Since this is in a second home I expect it may be years before I run out of power discs.

Miele has been having some good promotions on dw this year. I bought mine when they were offering a $200/$400 rebate. I spend $200 more than I planned and got an upgraded model as it gave me $200 more in rebate dollars. The next promo was a free counter top coffee maker, and their current promo is a free extened warranty. Not sure what will be next.

One of my daughaters uses lots of plastics (small children) and I don’t find the crystal dry does a great job on them. My Auto open drying works very well.

The Miele had a red light on the top left hand side that indicates the machine is running. Bosch has the light on the floor.

Miele has just come out with some new models with some improved features.

You can’t go wrong with either - it just depends which interior works best for your needs and how much you want to pay..

I have owned Miele and Bosch. Like Kim G posted, they are both nice; however, I would choose Miele again and again. Our appliance guru told us that Bosch dishwasher had problems with leaks lately. Not sure if the info is legit but passing it on.

When you don't use AutoDos, what detergent do you use? Finish Powerball Tabs? Miele Detergent? Cascade Powder?

In my main house I use the better rated dw detergent I can buy at Sams. It was the Finish powerball but they moved to the quatum tabs that was not as highly rated as the Casecade Platinum Plus that I currently use. I don’t see a huge difference in cleaning IMHO. I do keep powder Cascade as I also have a FP single dish drawer in an upstairs bar space that I use for overlfow and glassware. I feel using a dw tab in that is overkill so I just use powder. I also use the Cascade powder if I am doing a small load in the Miele. I did buy one pack of the MIele tabs and use 1/2 or a full tab on occasion. I think the newer tabs are likely better but as all Miele products they are more $$$$.

I've had both and prefer Bosch. Excellent performance at a better price. In my experience I've been underwhelmed with Miele - bought a vacuum and a top of the line dishwasher and after that I decided they're just not worth the price. I've had three Bosch dishwashers - one 20 years old, one eight and one new - all excellent.

In speaking recently with a Miele service tech in our area, he recommended the simpler 5 series for longevity.

In CR's tests, the Bosch SHP78CM5N and SHX78CM5N performed well enough to earn recommended ratings and have high predicted reliability. You might take some dishes to the store and see if they fit acceptably.

We love, love, love our Bosch Benchmark dishwasher. I love it mainly for the table utensils rack. I didn’t even realize it was there until it was installed and worried about the little utensil basket on bottom rollout. The top rack keeps the silverware from banging against each other. I also love that the recessed “handle”, like our Benchmark fridge, does not protrude into the clearance of the aisle. So far it runs great. It is smarter than we need but it is great.

In CR's tests, the Bosch SHP9PCM5N/SHX9PCM5N (Benchmark) didn't perform any better than the SHP78CM5N/SHX78CM5N (800) and cost $500 more.

Yes Missy, there's 3rd rack for utensils and flatware like the photo above.
