Not a RRD!

I saw rose rosette disease (RRD) in person (not in my garden), removed two suspicious roses from my garden (most likely it was not RRD), and saw many RRD cases on forums and the internet. The main characteristics of RRD are extensive reddish growth and an unusual number of thorns.

Looks a little like midge fly damage, or rather the damage their feeding larvae (maggots), do. Look at the place where the shoot makes a 90° angle bend. Are you in Rose Midge Fly country? Have you seen Rose Midge Fly Damage elsewhere among your roses?

I hope what we are seeing is just mechanical damage, a human or animal brushed up against the tender stem and partially snapped it, not enough to cause it to completely snap off.

It doesn’t have any of the key characteristics of RRD: witches broom, abnormal red growth that doesn’t green up, hyperthorniness, and rubbery mishapen growth that doesn't firm up.
