Help me choose a coffee table for the living room

last year
last modified: last year

We have a spacious living room in our apartment, walls painted in Pure White, the floors and the rug are like this:

Plan to buy a neutral colored sectional at West Elm that will look something like this:

Want to choose a coffee table - the purpose is for the drinks/snacks while watching TV. Looking on Litfad: https://www.litfad.com/marble-stone-coffee-tables_90c-23206328-23207039.html as well as Wayfair. Macys.com and Amazon.

In the adjacent dining room we have this solid wood table (dark walnut color). Not sure if the coffee table color should match it:

I wanted one with the white or marble like top (faux marble, stone, sintered stone, etc.), or at least scratch resistant that is easy to clean. Something like this:https://www.litfad.com/2-tier-elliptical-coffee-table-with-1-shelf-and-container-storage-for-foyer-white-47l-x-24w-x-16h-s-6776089.html

My daughter says that we need to buy the one made of solid wood in dark walnut or something like that, and that this white marble stuff looks outdated. We don't have any design sense. Would appreciate any advice. Budget of up to $600.

How about a different texture...rattan or wicker. You could choose one that has the tone of the table and black accents (chair legs).

this design above (that looks like it would fit right on some farm) I don't like at all, to be honest. Want something modern.

OK, I still think you need a different texture and not heavy wood like the farm table and bench (that's why I considered the trunk from PB.)

How about matching the tone of the chairs?

If you are keeping the trestle table and bench, you don't want to throw in brass and glass table.

this looks like something I would find on a collective farm in the USSR in the 1980s. This doesn't work at all. Hoping for some additional suggestions.

I would not try to match the dining room table. Maybe with a deep sofa with a chaise, a few small tables would be more functional

    Asher from West Elm.

Or something functional like Room and Board Slim C-tables, which come in 17 colors. These just kind of blend in.

Would you recommend something of bigger size? Would prefer close to 40" at least.

The one from Litfad isnt the right style for the rest of your furniture. Consider something with simple lines like this one from Macy’s.

Hi Emily, can you please post some more high quality suggestions/options? My concern about the wood surface that is that if I drink coffee/tea other drinks and eat snacks on this table, it will leave spots/scratches/etc.

Sorry but this coffee table you like table is not a good look with your other selections. IMO it's going to look even worse on that light rug.

OK, so can you please recommend some coffee tables that would be a good, assuming that I want the surface to be durable (because I am planning to actually use to it drink coffee/wine/tea and eat snacks while watching TV?

Don't discount have a piece of glass cut for the top of the table.

Jason, any more rude remarks from you? Trying to help and you respond in an ugly fashion?

You dont want anything that has a farmhouse look, yet your trestle table with bench screams farmhouse

Room and Board makes Parson coffee tables with steel legs which can be powder coated in a number of colors and has multiple top options.

They also make the Slim series of tables, like C table I sent, in coffee table sizes:

    These are 46"-48" in width.

The reason though that I suggested the C-table style, which Room and Board offers both in the Slim and Parsons line though, is because if you are going to be eating on a large sofa, this style of table pulls up close to the sofa rather that you have to lean over to a large table that has to be far enough away from the soft to get around it. They are particularly convenient for the chaise part of the sofa.

HU-121436380 - I don't mind and even like the farmhouse look. My issue is how durable the surface will be. Because it seems that many people buy these coffee tables for the décor only, whereas I will actually be drinking coffee on it. So I just want the surface to be durable, that's why I was looking into the sintered stone top tables and such. But please share any recommendations of the tables I can buy that you think would be good. Thank you!

The Parsons tables come with multiple top options including ceramic, quartz and granite. The slim tables are powder coated metal.

IMO first pic a style that bench at the DR table so not good with the chairs and why ? Coffe table is always an issue with chaise sofas why not get 2 end tables to start and then see how much a coffee is needed . I agree probably one that is nested tables for sure not rectangular .

How about these 2 from West Elm?

Also this one from Wayfair in Brown (it's not exactly Dark Walnut but close):

The only material you can use on the top that is impervious to drink rings etc would be plastic laminate.

The length of the sofa/sectional will determine the size of your table. Don't undersize it.

Maureen - great advice! Can you please tell me this: does the color of the coffee table in the living have to match (at least roughly) the color of the dining table in the adjacent dining room? Or they can be completely different? In other words, I can have the dark walnut colored dining table on the right in the dining area and the stacking black and white coffee table on the left in the living area?
