Refinished hardwood- stairs

i just refinished my red oak hardwoods and am happy with the results except for the stairway.
They left the vertical facing stairs with the old finish.
Is this normal?
Any ideas on how to make this look better? I
was thinking about painting black or white and having the railings match.
Any ideas appreciated.
