Paint Color suggestions For Open Area and kitchen

last year

I am purchasing this home in a little over 2 weeks. We need to paint quickly so we can move in. These are the only pictures I have (pictures from the sale listing).

The counter looks brown but it is gray with brown undertones. It is Silestone Marengo.

The backsplash, which I feel brings out the brown undertones, will be coming off. I am not sure yet what I will choose but thinking either white or another neutral.

The floor is a light grey plank.

Any suggestions on what color and tone would look best with this kitchen and the open areas? Right now the kitchen is a light grey with a baby blue tone. I do not like white for a wall color. If you have backsplash suggestions, that would be great too.

Thank you in advance!!

I would wait until after living there a while to paint, especially if you're paying someone = $$$. You need to move you own furnishings in, make the changes you want to make in the kitchen, and then make a determination what you think will look good and like with YOUR fixed and non-fixed elements and the overall "feel" of the house. Paint should be last.

I agree with the above. Of course, many people want to paint before move in because of the obvious convenience. I thought I was going to do, but life had other plans. I’m actually glad I’ve had the time to see my home in various lighting, tine of day and with my furniture. I’ve not chosen a color yet, but it’s gonna different than what I wanted at first.

I agree. Your new house looks very nice, and its very clean. Move in and wait at least 6 months, before you even think about changing anything. What you think you might like right now, will most likely be what you dont want 6 months later.

It's hard to find the right color when you're not living there. Everytime you select a paint color you need to sample. We don't know what your furniture looks like. Especially since you're planning on changing the backsplash, the paint color decision seems premature. We had our living room and kitchen painted two years after we moved in and it was surprising to me how undisruptive it was. If you have a team they will be done quicker than you think. Ours cleaned up enough every day that we were able to use the kitchen in the evenings. I think the only thing you really need to do before moving in is refinish floors (if they need it).

As long as you can look at samples in your light before committing, painting ahead of your move shouldn’t be a problem. Your floors are warm but your current paint is a little too cool. I’d go for a warmer, lighter grey. This is Sherwin Williams Snowbound. Tile is Fireclay Tile in Tusk (top) and French Linen (bottom)

I would keep the same color and see how you like it once you have moved in. I happen to like the color as is. Good idea removing the backsplash

We have to paint before we move in. There is a huge fountain mirror monstrocity we have to take off the wall in the living area that is attached with a big board. There is also a plug cable attached to the wall underneath the mirror.

A wall in the master bedroom has a big seam showing and the color is a hideous royal blue. Three bathrooms have ugly wallpaper we are taking down. We will be buying new furniture for the living area. I would wait to paint if I could. I do not have to purchase white backsplash. I thought that would maybe look best with the counter. I want something timeless that will not look outdated in 3 years. When you build a home, you paint it before you move in. I have had to choose paint for 5 homes. I have never regretted any of the colors I chose. I tend to pick lighter coastal or neutral colors (Sea Salt, Assessible Beige, Balboa Mist, Beachglass, Silvermist, Agreeable Gray).

I'd love to be able to wait and see but that is not ideal in this situation. We are having the outside painted as well.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

When you say, ”I do not have to purchase white backsplash,” what do you mean exactly?

I’ve painted every house I’ve bought before I moved in. It’s a cleanliness thing. And you’re not knocking down walls you’re just painting them.

I really like the fan in the living area. I had a similar one and I am sorry that I got rid of it.

eam44 I can choose a different backsplash is what I meant. My NI I cannot keep the color. There will be a mess underneath the huge mirrored fountain on the living area wall, not to mention lots of holes from pictures. I do not dislike the color but it feels too "cool." I would like to choose a bit of a warmer tone.

Since you seem to like the greenish colors, then, I might choose the seaglass, or sea salt that you have used before. Either would look good in your rooms. Silver Mist is also a nice color. I myself, dont like accessible beige, nor do I like agreeable gray, or anything else that looks beige, and they dont go well with your flooring anyway. A pale aqua would also go well in your home. I would leave the brown backsplash, since it goes with the counters.

These photos are from the listing and are not OP's furniture.

For the walls, Revere Pewter will work well with the counter top, the floor, and the white cabinets. It also is very flexible with natural light.

Back splash suggestion is brushed stainless subway tile.

    https://oasistile.com/products/stainless-steel-beveled-3-x-6-brushed-metal-tile?variant=39709963387074&srsltid=AfmBOopAhz2pOr3b0h-VGtCw3iweQzmTMvV7IzvrW-qwf-ZLnKSRnG_0IT4

This combination is very much my home. I used Kravet fabrics for window treatments, accent pillows.

Even my dog looks great with Latika fabric.

Subway tile is great if that’s what you enjoy. I like to choose a color I love in a beautiful shape. That can get expensive! You have a quiet counter top so you can really choose just about anything for the backsplash. Neutral colors that go well with your neutrals would be best because changing out a backsplash can be a messy business. But your space can easily accommodate marble tile or hand glazed encaustic tiles. You have a lot of options.

if you need to paint then I would focus on the flooring and choose something that the complements that - can you get into the house to see sample boards or no?

eam44, don't you think that tile looks too much like a shower floor? Plus, so much grout to keep clean.

  • last year

You don't really say you dislike what's there...We have no idea your preferred color scheme. SOME assistance would be helpful. Right now I would say 'don't fix what ain't broke" . The gray is working, To pick paint before you spend the money on a back splash seems backwards. You could end up wanting a different color.

@elcieg, I don’t think any of those look like a shower floor - how kind of you to ask.

It can be hard to understand the scale of a tile from a close image, but the encaustic tiles are 8” squares, the Ogee drop is about 5.5” x 5”, and the Calacatta Gold marble hex tiles are 4” hex, so there is far less grout to clean in any of these applications than in the current mosaic.

I would go with warm soft greige or off-white close to floor.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions!

To clarify, this is a second home in Florida but I spend most of my time there because I take care of my elderly father who lives nearby. I am at my first home till September 8th, the closing is the following day.

arcy_gw, I am going to choose the backsplash first, then the paint. We need to take things off of the walls that the owner left behind and take down the wallpaper as well, then the painter needs to plug holes, fix any issues with the walls (like the seam in the master bedroom showing through the paint). I have time to choose a backsplash and then would choose the paint color.

I dislike anything that brings out the brown tone in my countertop, like the backsplash which also looks dated to me.

The paint has a baby blue hue to it. I also do not like the glass pendants over the island that have two blue stripes in them. I will be changing out the light fixture in the dining area as well. I was considering changing out the pulls and knobs for black and putting up black pendants to give an updated look but not sure how that would look. Not this exact light but maybe something similar?

I am not sure if the darker paint would go in a Florida home although it does look nice. As for the Revere Pewter, I like it but not sure if it would bring out the brown tones in the countertop. I was hoping to bring the gray out more so. Right now, with that backsplash, the countertop looks brown. The same goes for the backsplash, I would like something that would tone down the brown tone but bring out the gray. It does not have to be a solid, color. I do appreciate every suggestion. We were not looking to buy but this house came up at a very cheap price and we felt it would be crazy not to take it. So, it has been very sudden and quick, something we were not preparing for. Usually I know what we are doing way in advance and have time to look at samples for months ahead of time. Not this time!

We love the home and layout and are really excited to move. I do have a lot going on in my life between my dad's care, buying and selling a home. There is no "rush" as in we have to move when we close. Right now, I am getting ideas and hoping to get some semblance of color schemes. I do appreciate everyone's help!

Celery thank you so much for the visuals! That helps me SO MUCH. We would be using SW paint. I know they can match the Revere Pewter. Do you think that would make my countertop look more brown and how would it look with my light grey plank tile flooring?

    The stools are not staying.

I generally tell people to wait 6 months before making any changes and really think about the changes that you are going to make, but I understand your desire to paint before moving in if the walls truly look as blue in real life as I am seeing on my monitor.

You cannot pick a color until you close, but you can order color swatches from Samplize before you move. You can also ask the owner a few more questions that will help us help you. Can you ask what paint color and trim color they used? Can you ask them if they have an extra tile from when they did their flooring that you could have. (Most people save the remaining tiles when the project is done, so they have a dozen sitting in their basement.)

I think of walls as the backdrop for art and furnishings. So I want a color on the walls that works well with the art and furnishings I own. It also needs to work with the flooring. Flooring is the 2nd largest surface area in our homes with walls being the largest.

If you can get a piece of the flooring you will have something that you can work with to start narrowing your options.

When I work with new builds I take a piece of the flooring and put it outside and start laying sample paint colors next to the flooring in natural daylight. Natural daylight helps us see the underlying colors. Some colors are going to look pink or violet next to your flooring, some will look green, some blue or gray, some yellow. When you paint your walls these same colors that you see outside will be magnified inside your home when you are painting hundreds of square feet of color. Once you find the color that closely matches your flooring you can look for coordinating colors that work with the flooring.

Here I picked an image with some pink tones on the floor and used color snap to find the color that closely mimics the flooring. NO VIRTUALIZER WILL PROVIDE THE ACCURACY OF REAL LIFE COLOR - THIS IS JUST FOR DEMONSTRATING THE PROCESS!!!

    Breathless was too pink

    Reticence is close

The rest were further off the mark

So I then looked at the colors close to Reticence and found Unfussy Beige to be a very close match

I looked up unfussy beige to see what colors SW Recommended with Unfussy Beige

I like the contrast of Elder White and Mega Greige better than the tone on tone of Hush White, but I want something not as light as Elder white or as dark as Mega Greige.

I looked for the colors that were on the same page as Mega Greige and found that Agreeable Gray is two shades lighter, but when I looked at that I found it just a bit too green (Not bad, but not quite perfect)

So I looked for something similar to Agreeable Gray but a bit warmer and found Popular Gray

Better but not quite where I want to be . . .

With one more try I found Whirlwind. . .

Again - do your comparisons in Natural daylight on a sunny afternoon.

Pics of outdoor testing I have done

Thank you so much for your explanation. I do realize some gray's will have a violet undertone. I have learned only a smidgeon about undertones and LRV. I know gray tends to be more of a cool color. I was hoping to warm up the open areas with paint color without making the brown undertones in the countertop pop like they have with the backsplash.

The owner is an elderly woman who moved in with a niece in another state.

I know there are left over paint cans. I can see if there is any extra flooring in any of the closets or laundry room cabinets.

The house has a little bit of the furniture left over (I guess the movers messed up) we need to get rid of. We will be buying new furniture for the living area. We already have a coffee table and side table we hope to keep. My main goal is to have cohesive, well flowing spaces that feel warm and inviting, not cold. I realize I can warm things up with an area rug and furniture.

You are correct, in some areas the "gray" paint looks a bit baby blue.

Unfussy Beige and Hush White look like good candidates. I have a home and used a gray called "Close knit" by Bher. I am very happy with it. https://www.behr.com/colorfullybehr/trend-color-spotlight-close-knit/ doesn't feel cool to me here in CA, but maybe too cool for your needs.

Close Knit is a very nice color. I like it and like that it has warmer undertones. Once I get to Florida and close, I can get the big sample squares to put together with the flooring and see how it looks, outside if possible.

Any other paint suggestions in the greige color with blue or green undertones?
