Why not choose a color from the stone that is on the posts and garage?

It looks like there might be some gray in your stone so maybe go that direction. A lot probably depends on whats available in your area.

Landscape rocks to be used as paths? Accent? Rock walls? Please not as ‘mulch’.

Hard to see the exact colors in the garage/posts stone. Maybe take a closeup picture or two in different light and go the stone yard and see what matches best.

HALLET, I disagree. We have stone "mulch" and have no issues with it.

For decades we fought the lawn battle. It seems that we finally managed to convince the Californians that there is no reason *I* should not have a lawn just because *they* would have to water one. Location matters.

Now comes the rock battle. How well this is going to work depends entirely on where you are in the world. Based solely on the picture, I'd say it was a bad idea. Rocks work where the heavy lifting of weed suppression is done by drought. That picture is far too green, and has far, far too much pine straw.

Love what mad said. It just so depends. Would not add rock like small rocks) for some sort of decorative landscaping except near- xeriscape climate and surrounding trees (meaning lack of tree litter).

I can though see using rocks in smaller doses, smaller areas, for very specific purposes, in wetter climes, with the understanding that the area will need maintenance, weeding/ pre- emergent. Not exactly sure what would be good examples! But for instance, let’s say do one wants to make a small informal DIY gravel / flagstone sitting area out back and will do the maintenance because it’s amongst some lovely plantings. Or sometimes the gravel strip next to foundation because of rain splash, but not planted ( so not TRYING to water & grow stuff).

Would help to know your intensions: where/how/size. Normally paint colors are not a driving force as rocks’ shades are so subtle, especially when intermixed. Balance, cohesiveness, plant choices and your own personal taste are more important.

Before you consider covering the planting beds, you need a landscaping plan for your home which doesn't seem apparent from this photo.

None of those crappy lava rocks they sell at the big box stores. I prefer mulch or pine needles around plants as it's healthier for the plants, but if you must do rocks, visit a brick/rocks supplier in your area and get something that makes a statement

Black or brown mulch looks good with contrasting plantings.
