MY first thought always is does he want one and will he use it We have had international students for the last 14 yrs and honestly only maybe 1/4 of them ever use a desk except as a place to fill with clutter .Take a non distored pic and post a to scale flor plan if you want help . But first have atalk with your son

Define his present and future needs and the amount of wall space needed to accommodate both. Then head to Ikea and speak to a consultant (and consider storage as well, which you can never have too much of).

What does your son prefer?

Desks are sometimes heavy space hogs.

If your son builds models or enjoys other construction activities he may need a large top.

Surface can be held up by Ikea cabinets( like the Helmer) .

These components can easily be switched up and moved around.

Hangers close to entry door or closet will keep backpacks,sports equipment ,headphones etc off the floor.

A chair or two for visiting friends is a bonus,and can stow under the desk top.

Always a good touch to put maps,science,astronomy posters etc on the walls.

Let your son choose his environment.

I may nix the Debbie Harry poster one boy taped to his ceiling many moons ago haha.

Thank you @housegal200. RIght now I think the best layout would be to keep the bed where it is and put the desk on the opposite wall. He likes it against the wall as it makes the bed feel bigger to him. Although I recognize its not the best visually.

I love you idea of bulliten boards above and will do that. We also have a floating white shelf we could put above his desk or above his bed? What do you think would look best?

Yes, good consideration. It was actually my son's idea to put a desk there, as he has two younger siblings who are quite noisy and he wants a quiet space other than the kitchen table to do his homework.

I agree though it does take up a lot of space. And his room is quite small. Its just 9x10. He has a twin XL bed. 38 inches wide and 80 inches long.

I was thinking this desk and then cutting off the legs and attaching black modern sawhorses?

His window well is 60 cm off the grounds and about 140 cm wide.

His room is quite small, so I agree I am hesitant to put a desk in the space. Although he is in need of a quiet space to do his work away from his siblings.

Honestly, run a shelf across the window wall with sturdy bookshelf braces, legs, sawhorses, or desk-high night dressers. He needs more surface space than the Ikea desk. Here's a desktop with modern sawhorses--easier than putting together an Ikea desk. But Ikea does have tabletops and legs on wheels.

There wasn’t a source, but it’s easy to duplicate. Try Ikea as a starting point to get a sense of what/how is possible. If handy, go on Pinterest and search for Ikea desk hacks for even more ideas.

@housegal200 awesome. Thank you so much. I love the idea of putting the desk there. Its just that we need to be able to close those blinds at night. Those are black out blinds and his room is super bright. Do you have any ideas on how to get around that?

Also, his room is only 9x12 - quite small. The window well is about 60 cm high and 140 cm wide. I like the black legs - so maybe sawing off the legs and putting on those modern metal legs you were referring to?

Put the bed parallel to the window wall, a foot away. to access window--sleeping end of the room. Upgrade the bedding and get a rug for the middle of the room once you decide on the layout.

Run a shallow but long "shelf" desk on one of the long walls with attractive sawhorses, wheeled legs, or metal legs. Check out Ikea, Home deport for sheleing and supports. Don't be skimpy with the length. Create a wall of posters your son is interested in or a couple very large bulletin boards. As mentioned already, add stackable organizer for desktop for supplies, paper, etc.

I like the idea of the desk in front of the window. That will be so much nicer for him than staring at a wall. It doesn't seem you would need to have it out a full 12" to close the draperies. If you put the desk there and the bed as shown in your latest 1st and 2nd pics, I would move the nightstand between the bed and closet to balance the room better,

I do not thinkj the desk needs to be large so how about a square in a corner with a nice lamp and a comfy chair maybe where the plant is . Our students even when they want a desk are happy with exactly that a squre in a corner it serves the purpose and takes up very little spac e.
