Debra there are named varieties that are less aggressive but yes it will spread quickly.

My obedient plant is not aggressive.

Ive been growing Physostegia virginica for several years and it is agressive in moist soils. I had it growing in a moist spot near some Iris virginica, and the obediant plant surrounded and thugged out the Iris. I removed it right before the Iris dissapeared comepletely. I think the flowers are pretty, and the bumblebees and hummingbirds love them. I have a clump now that I try to keep from taking over by removing the edges as they multiply. In the wild Obediant Plant usually isn't growing in huge monocultures because of the competing vegetation it associates with. There are a few different species but virginica has the largest range and it's the species found in Michigan and Illinois. I believe there's also a white flowered form.

Debra the coolest feature is that each flower is on a ball & pivot so that the flowers can be arranged all to one side if one chooses to. It is fun to just move them around for the heck of it. I grow a couple of varieties but my favorite is Physostegia virginiana 'Variegata'. It is less aggressive.
