Seeking Advice on Dining Setup: Chair + Bench or Just Chair ?

last year
last modified: last year

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are debating between two dining setups and would love to get your input.

We’ve already purchased a walnut dining table that seats 4-6 people. There are three of us at home (including our child), and we're considering a setup with 2 chairs, 1 bench, and 2 stools for added flexibility or 4 chairs + 2 stools for more traditional set up.

The idea is to use the bench for quick in-and-out seating and stow away the stools as side tables when not in use, bringing them out only when we have guests.

However, I've come across some discussions where people mentioned that having a bench setup can be a bit awkward, especially when entertaining guests.

We’d appreciate any advice or experiences you can share! Below are the matching bench, chair, and stool options we’re considering.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Benches are uncomfortable. I like chairs with backs. I'd get 2 chairs for the ends that could be extra LR seating and 4 dining room chairs, they can be folding chairs, if that's what you need.

A comfortable chair at the table is so much better. A backless bench or a stool feels so unwelcoming.

You can't entertain guests on stools while you're in comfortable chairs Kids don't use the backs of chairs until they're big enough. That's the only use for stools. In your case, no use. You'll need chairs. No chairs at all and only 2 benches - everyone suffers. Acceptable.

Perhaps the guests would get the comfortable chairs and the hosts would sit on the benches or stools. Not ideal by any means.

Based on comments you’ve received so far, I guess it’s good to be aware that some people are not comfortable sitting on benches or stools. Personally, I have no problem with either and do not think they are “unwelcoming” in any way. I like the look of a bench and stools that can be tucked away and used when needed make perfect sense. Presumably, you would offer the chairs to any guests that aren’t comfortable with other options, so I don’t see the issue.

If the table is meant to seat 6, I think 3 on one side (even if stools fit) will only be comfortable for kids. And again, benches are good for piling in kids, but not for adults. I've had one and prefer chairs. I guess it depends who you will "entertain" more in this phase of your life. You can always get rid of bench/chairs as your kid(s)('s friends) get older; or buy all charis and just buy once.

If your table seats 6, the most comfortable option is to get 6 chairs if you can afford it and if it fits in your room.

As far as having children on benches, I can see the lively activity that would result if my wiggly children had been sitting on benches. Much more peaceful at mealtime to have each child in their own chair.

You could look at doing benches and stools, but it kind of depends on how you and you're family are. Some people prefer having a back to a seat, and sometimes chairs are better for kids depending on how old they are. Here are two separate designs that might help you figure out what seating you'd like:

4 chairs and a bench - kids are fine with a bench, and you can place it in another spot much easier than 2 chairs. You’d have 2 chairs on each long side of the table for daily meals. When you have company, use the bench on one long side and move those 2 chairs to the short ends. Yourself and your child can use the bench, and guests can use the chairs.

Chairs! those benches are uncomfortable with no back support and honestly the aesthetics are not as nice as all chairs..you have very upscale looking space… I would do chairs..maybe something with clean lines upholstered ..leather?

Ditto no bench seating it barely functions in a park where most are in pants or shorts

Yes to chairs, no to bench. No one even kids are comfortable on a backless wood bench.

One of my relatives has a bench and every get together has to play ”chair police” and kick the kids out of chairs and onto the bench. Even the relative doesn’t want to sit on the bench…
