After trying many different brands and types of vacuums to keep up with all the fur my dogs gift our home, I now swear by Miele. I love their upright version for its ease, but their canister vacuums worked just as well for me on dog fur.

They do a great job on all my rugs, including wool.

I have plenty of vacuums from central vac, cordless Dysons and MIele canisters. If you can't have a central, I think you'd have the best luck with a Miele canister. The powerhead has at least 5 height settings and you can also dial back suction. I know some manufacturers of rugs advise against using a brush roll but with dog hair, I can't get my rugs clean with suction alone. I just am mindful to not set the brush too low on the powerhead. Some of my rugs are 12 years old and no signs of damage from vacuuming.

Do not use a beater bar on wool rugs. It will destroy them. I have a Meile canister that allows me to use a beater bar attachment on my nylon rugs, and just a regular suction head on my hardwood floors and oriental (wool and silk) rugs. Great vacuum with lots of changeable attachment heads.
