It is a Symphyotrichum, perhaps laeve.

It's Smooth Blue Aster, Symphyotrichum laeve. Clasping leaves and a ray petal count between 15 and 30.

Doesn't Symphyotrichum laeve have smooth stems? Here's a blowup and enhanced view of my stem.

It's uncommon but sometimes the stems can be slightly hispid, like in your case. Asters often hybridize, but other than the slightly hispid stems there are no other charecters to support this being a hybrid.

Thanks for the information, that is very helpful. I run into lots of different asters and always seem to have problems ID'ing them correctly.

That one isn't even in my field guide (neither is S.laeve) and I've been tempted for years to call it Symphyotrichum lanceolatum but only because that was the only one that seemed to match something in my guide. Thanks for taking the time for a correction. I think I need to go back and make lots of corrections to my previous collection of photos - never to old to learn something new!

I searched Symphyotrichum species in Michigan on i nat, and several species came up. It took a few screen shots to show them all.

Their search results are very erratic/confusing. If I search for "Symphyotrichum", S. puniceum does not show as a result. However if I search for a synonym, Aster puniceus, then the results will show S. puniceum - odd.

And there are lots of synonyms, varieties, and even some hybrids mentioned, as I found out while researching the species.

The name changes happened decades ago. There are still a few people who haven't gotten the memo, but still using the name Aster is fine, unless it's a species that was moved to a different new genus other than Symphyotrichum.
