It depends on the width of the opening and the height. Because they're popular and new the current cost is high. $1k a foot is an example of fold to one side.

Buy a quality product in either and have it installed by dealer, not a GC and you should have no issues. Stay away from the box stores.

I have Euro-wall multi-slide doors and we've been happy with them so far. We have 5 of them, with the largest being 18' wide x 10' high, all with hurricane rated glass.

Our installers were supposed to be good and one of two used by the Marvin window/door distributor. They ended up being ok, but missed some weather stripping on the sliders. It took months to get the window distributor's warranty team out to remove the slider panels and fix the issue.

Keep in mind that a bifold door panel is approx 30 inches in width, so you have a lot of material instead of glass. It opens wider though because you do not have a fixed panel. Sliding doors or lift and sliding doors have much wider panels available with more glass and light coming in. I would just research some pictures here on Houzz or Google or Bing and you will see the difference. Ease of operation is similar if the panels for the lift and sliding doors are not too big and heavy.

This statement is completely wrong. You might want to read up on the current specs of bi-fold door manufacturers.
