Dark corner of patio

This back corner of our patio is dark as there is a deck overhead. We are having a new patio put in, and in the dark corner we are having some (4) armorstone sets to make a feature. My thinking is to have gravel down for drainage, followed by landsca0e cloth and river rock. It also will include wiring for an upward soft light. My thinking is to set a few pots of ferns, astilbe, grasses, or such to liven up the corner. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sounds lovely but I have same question as @Sheila Rowan - what is Armorstone set? Sounds like it’ll be something with water & I’m not sure about success in the corner you show.

Sorry, that is confusing. Armor stone are large rocks about 500 lb each. 4 of them would be set side by side to create a wall about 15" high.

I live in Ontario, just north of Toronto.

It would be nice to have plants and a little water feature there. Not sure you need a planting bed if you can get the same effect with some big potted plants and a freestanding fountain.

Not sure about the uplight...downlights or mushroom lights would better...no need to light the underside of the upper deck.

If I’m not mistaken, isn’t Amour stone generally used for retaining walls?

It can be, some use them in a garden as a feature as well.

Reading this post again, your uplights would be casting foliage shadows and that would be nice.... I hadn't thought of that.

Hello! Here is the corner now that work is done and you can better understand. I love the feature. I'm looking for ideas on how to fill this corner, that does not het sunlight. There is a little top soil under the river rock but mainly gravel, landscape fabric and river rock.
