Kitchen Stainless Backsplash - You CAN use screws!

I just wanted to post to let anyone considering installing a stainless-steel backsplash know that it IS possible to do so with just screws (and no adhesive) so that the backsplash is removable.


When I searched this site before our install, all of the responses on the subject that I could find said that you needed to use adhesive, or you would run into countless problems. We had our backsplash installed back in May of 2021, so I now (in 2024) feel pretty confident saying that it works long term.


We were doing our kitchen remodel in stages, and I just knew that at some point, I was going to want to take the backsplash off. And, sure enough, at some point we had to have a vent installed so that we could go from our ventless range hood to a vented one. If we had had to destroy the stainless backsplash to do the work, I would have had a heart attack. Instead, our vent guys simply unscrewed the backsplash, installed venting, and then screwed the backsplash back on.


Because we did our backsplash as a standalone project instead of as part of a full kitchen remodel, we were able to use a sheet metal/HVAC specialist instead the backsplash being just another project for a general contractor. Because of this when I talked to our guy about installing with just screws, he said sure, no problem. I apologize that the pictures aren’t of a pristine kitchen, but some of the comments said that using screws wouldn’t work behind a range because of the expansion/contraction resulting from the heat of the range. I wanted to cook for a while after our install to check on that before posting about our install. We haven’t experienced any such issues.


And that’s because our stainless guy had a very clever solution to that problem. Where the piece behind the stove stops and the stainless pieces on either side begins, he cleverly left a gap between the pieces and then he created “wings” on the piece behind the range that extend out over and sit on top of the adjoining pieces to cover the gap in a finished looking way while allowing the piece behind the stove to expand and contract into the gap between the pieces. You can see this in the attached pictures.


Our stainless guy screwed the screws into the studs in the wall behind. All screws are stainless steel, #10. He drilled slightly oversized screw holes for the part of the backsplash behind the range, again to deal with the expansion/contraction during cooking. At no time, however, do you see any space around the screw head.

Everywhere else where a piece of sheet metal meets another piece of sheet metal, he used a commercial grade, stainless steel colored silicone. If you’re in San Francisco, he bought it from Center Hardware on 3rd Street.


Other commentators cautioned about “oil canning” that might occur if you don’t use adhesive, which according to Google is visible waviness of flat areas of sheet metal. As I understand it, it’s akin to the shimmering effect that you might see if you looked at a reflection on a surface of a pot of oil. If that’s what oil-canning means, it’s not that noticeable in real life and doesn’t bother us.


You can kind of see it in the reflections in the photos.And if I hadn’t been looking for “oil canning” because of reading the comments, I would not even have noticed the slight waviness. It doesn’t even register in my awareness, as a flaw or otherwise. But your mileage may vary.


If you really want to avoid even that slight visual effect, you could try using a heavier gauge piece of stainless steel. We used a 0.22-gauge, no. 4 brushed finish. And after you finish, if you don’t like it, you can take the backsplash down (because it's removable!), apply adhesive, and put it back up .


Finally, of course, the screws mean that it’s not a smooth expanse of stainless steel but is interrupted by screws. Since we’re going for a commercial look with the stainless steel in the first place, the visible screws don’t bother me. And again, the whole reason for doing this is so that if I need to remove a section of backsplash, I can do so without destroying the whole wall.


The third picture shows the detail of the "wings" my stainless guy created. The stainless on the right is behind the range and the "wings" are in the middle of the photo running vertically. The "wings" are attached to the stainless on the right and they extend over a small gap between the piece on the right and the piece on the left and rest on top of the piece on the left.


As the piece on the right expands and contracts because of heat, the wings move left and right over the stainless piece on the left, but you never see a gap between the two stainless pieces.

    You really used 22 gauge SS sheet? If so, absolutely no chance of oil canning. 22 ga is 1/32”, nearly a full millimeter, robust stuff. You can’t bend it with your fingers, can’t cut it with common (non-powered/manual) shears, need a decent size brake to form it. The cheaper sort of SS sink is made from just the next size up, 20 gauge. I have some 22 ga SS that I need to cut and form for my kitchen, and I’m going to have a friend cut it on his industrial waterjet table and form in on his heavy finger brake.

    I really like the idea of kitchen stuff that can be removed and moved for future projects. The wings/flanges are very smart. I think exposed screws are fine. Of course you must “clock” them (obsessively line all the screw slots up with each other). It’s a law.

    Did you run the grain vertically or horizontally? Did your guy cut and form the sheets onsite?

    If you would, can you compare the cost of your SS backsplash to having a tile backsplash installed?

    So "I" didn't use anything! I just sat on my behind and watched!

    But when I asked my stainless guy for the details of the job for my records, he said that it was 22 gauge SS steel. Yea, it was pretty stiff! And you can see from the pictures that our guy did in fact line up the screws!

    As to "oil canning," in the last picture, you can see that the reflection off the piece behind the range is wavy. I think that's what they are talking about with oil canning. It's not anywhere near that bad in real life, but it does kinda look like that.

    Total for the project ran $5,412.50 (back in 2021). But that also included a piece of stainless about 2' x 3' that he cut to fit the cupboard under our sink. Water leakage had eaten up the floor of the cabinet, so I wanted a piece to lay on top of it until we got it fixed. Worked so well, we still haven't fixed the floor of that cabinet.

    It also included a little stainless roof for my mailbox outside to divert rain away from it. But nothing was broken out. It was a flat fee for all of this.

    I just checked and I don't see anything I would identify as "grain." But, I guess we're talking about these little scratches. They are run horizontally.

    Yes, that is the grain.


    My range wall has no cabinets, just empty wall with a 48” hood. The idea is so I can change ranges, go to a larger one, add a second oven - keep things very flexible. I was going to tile the wall, but the idea of being able to remove and replace the backsplash as needed to add gas line or 240v outlet or whatever is - well, it seems really logical.


    Thank you for posting. This is the most interesting backsplash I’ve seen here in whenever long.

    Congrats for finding a solution that works for you and believing in yourself! There are so many things about houses that just seem to be stuck with no thought of new ways to do things. Remodelling is sooooooooo wasteful and expensive. Why are we still making things so permanent?

    Why do we block access to wires and plumbing and hvac, they are the systems of the house and sometimes need fixing, or moving, or whatever. Can someone please please create a new wall system to replace drywall.

    While I am on a bit of a rant……. Why don’t we use aluminum framed cabinets and just replace the insert? The framing is so thin now, you can hardly see it, and then you can decorate your cabinets to your hearts desire to make them look like anything you want without ripping the entire thing out.

    Why couldn’t this be done for backsplashes? A thin aluminum fame with a glass front (or something better) and then you can slide the insert in, with anything you want printed on it. Make it look like tile if you want, a nature scene, fine art, or family photos, whatever.

    What about multi directional ceiling light panels, shine the light where you want it, at the intensity and colour that you want. I know the multicolour panels exist, but they seem to be more for show than utility. I think of this as I look at my horrible kitchen lighting and consider the work needed to pull them out, make new holes, patch up the old ones repaint ……………..

    There is more, and hopefully things will begin to change so that we are not so inhibited by the houses we inhabit.
