Shoe storage ideas at kitchen entryway

Hi, I’m struggling with this space where our back door opens directly into the kitchen. We have to use this entryway to take our dogs into the backyard, and therefore like to keep a couple pairs of “yard” shoes and dog things by the door. Currently, we just have this basket near the door to throw shoes in, but we are getting our kitchen redone soon and I want to find a better solution. Our kitchen is small, so ideally we would like to use as much space as possible for countertop space and storage. I had the idea of maybe installing a small pantry or cabinet near the door that would be used kind of like a closet, but I’m not sure if that makes sense for shoes or if it would take up too much space.

Wanted to see if anyone else has a similar kitchen space or ideas for shoe storage right near a kitchen door like this?

I'd buy or build something to sit outside the exterior door, a cabinet under a rain portico into which you can kick muddy boots. Because you have to take the boots off outside anyway, or track mud into the kitchen. Anyway kitchen space is too precious for shoe storage - unless it is a spacious kitchen.

If it’s more counter space you want to add to that open spot I’d think about open shelves for the space below the new counter. Maybe adjustable shelves so you could change spacing as needed. Shoes could sit on lower shelves, doggie ”things” could be held in a pull out basket. The open shelving seems more convenient than having closed shelving with a door that has to be opened to get to the stuff quickly for running into back yard. The extended counter would be handy for many things including a drop spot for things carrying in through back door.

A pullout shelf in the end cabinet could hold shoes, put a wire shelf over a boot tray or some kind of pan in it to collect drips and let the shoes dry. Measure well for the inserts. (a standard 24” L by choose the width wire shelf from the hardware store should fit.

I wouldn't get so specialized with cabinets that you end up breaking up the countertop scheme and cabinets that you have in the rest of your small kitchen. Make the last set of lower cabinets closest to the door with a roll out shelf inside the cabinet - similar to those used for pots and pans. (Like the type below.) But, put a basket on the lower roll out shelf to throw shoes in. Use a drawer in (like one used for silverware) for leashes, treats, bags.

I have the exact same issue and same kitchen design! I decided to extend the counter all the way to the wall, so things don't spill off. I was going to leave it open below the counter for muddy boots. However, yesterday I realized I could have a drawer under the counter to put all the gardening supplies, that get stored on the counter top there currently. This will open up more space for actual kitchen things. That still leaves space for the boots underneath. So now I am pondering the question of...just leave space open for boots to go on the floor, or put a pull out drawer, or....? Have you come up with any good solutions?
