Kitchen Backsplash Height

Hello Houzzers, I’ve been struggling with decision fatigue in particular the backsplash height in my kitchen remodel.

There are a pair of stacked floating shelves on the left and right walls and a ledge between hood and adjacent cabinets. I’ve been thinking of taking the backsplash up to the bottom of the hood (30” from countertop) and taking that same line across the left and right walls. That would mean the backsplash would go up to the bottom of the top shelf.

The colors in the rendering below are not accurate but I’ve included the cabinet and countertop (Cambria Dovestone) swatches. I was thinking of Riad Zellige in natural white for the backsplash.

Any thoughts/suggestions on this approach. I’m open to alternate ideas but can’t change layout or cabinets at this time. Thank you!

I think the positioning of the floating shelves makes it difficult. I would tile the wall above the stove, either to the shelf as you have it, or all the way up. Then use the countertop material to make a backspalsh on the sink wall just up to the bottom of the window. Or, move the floating shelves so you have just one that lines up with your back wall shelf.

@calidesign for the one shelf at the same height as the hood, would you tile to the bottom of that shelf or do the short countertop backsplash like you’ve suggested?

Remove the shelves, chalk a line that will be bottom of hood, and carry all the tile around, at one level.

Re position the lowest shelves to touch tile and don't stagger, the second above it.

You don't have enough upper cabinetry for the space. Frankly I'd eliminate them and hang great art .

Are the shelves staggered/not aligned? doesn't seem to suit the style.

I think your height idea is right. I am not sure about the zellige, but maybe a zellige-like could work. This is JMO, but something as "natural" or handmade looking as the zellige makes the unnaturalness of materials like quartz more apparent. Hope that makes sense. If you do go with handmade tile, check its thickness vis-a-vis the range wall and vent at the back of the range, as they are thicker than standard.
