Have you contacted GE customer service?

If it's a plastic handle with a chrome plating, you're screwed.

Replaing the handle is probably your best bet. Call an appliance service company that is certified to carry GE parts.

If all else fails, tape it off, smooth it out and paint it black with paint for plastic

I would look for a thin black sleeve that could be attached to it that covers most of the handle. Microwave looks quite used so save up to replace when budget allows.
