This is why I bought 2.sofas, I was going to do this setup but then, I found a lot of uneven space behind each couch.

I suspect you might be coming from a smaller home where furniture is placed along the walls. In homes this size, the area rug is centered on the fireplace and the furniture 'floats' in the room. Accessory items like sideboards and display hutches are placed along the walls as a backdrop for the seating.

Move them to the middle of the room, facing each other, just like ArchitecturalDetails suggested. Put painter’s tape around them and assume chairs. Now you have an approximate rug size.

Doing this will help you start to see how to float the furniture in the middle of a large room like this. (When I first walked into my own great room, I had no idea how I would furnish it either. It’s 33’ long by 26’ wide, so I understand your dilemma!)

Use cardboard boxes to represent future tables and chairs and then you can “see” them better before you buy anything else.

Yes, a conversation area is 12’ x 12’ so you will need to group the furniture around the fireplace. Lovely room!!!

Usoing two of the same rugs, do a back to back sofa arrangement. Furnish according to what each end will be used.

The other side of the 56" door is the stairs leading upstairs.
