Cold air return and obstacles

Wondering if a cold air return needs a smooth wall all around or if partially open shelving can be placed in front. Please see photo for an idea of is what I mean. The bookshelf placed in front of that return. Main floor. There are two cold air returns on this floor with a wall/doorway in between. 1400 sqft townhouse.

Very nice piece you have there. I would think it would work, but you would need to leave that bottom right shelf open or only place a small figurine or decorative bowl there so that the air can flow around it easily.

Thank you! I tried a different drawing but it seems the original was enough to get the idea across :) :) I gather from what you say that the airflow isn't affected by the various surfaces of the bookshelf (that the air doesn't need a smooth wall to flow along)

Depends on what you put on the shelves in front of the grill. You could block it with enough stuff.
