Compact Master Bath Refresh - Ideas Please!

last year
last modified: last year

We are planning a refresh of our 7x10 master bath. The layout and cabinetry will stay. We plan to replace tile, vanity counter, re-do shower (including replacing fiberglas base with tile) and update fixtures. Also thinking we'd do full wall mirror above vanity rather than individual mirrors. We are thinking the tile/counter will be in the direction of whitish/marble but nothing firm here.

We're hoping some fresh eyes might have other clever improvement ideas, especially with regard to shower re-do. Photos of tile/stone looks you think would work well are also welcome!

Some specific things we've considered but don't have strong feelings about:

  • Should we open up the top of the partition wall between shower and vanity (with or without glass) - for light & to open things up, yet retain privacy for shower?
  • We don't love the sliding shower door, but it is practical. Any other ideas here given the layout limitations? Or even ideas for best sliding door options?
  • Any other shower improvements? (we're thinking adding handheld sprayer, grab bar, more storage/shelving, maybe a bench...)
  • Any other thoughts???

Attaching some photos and floorplan for reference. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!!

I think changing the full shower wall next to the vanity would look much better as a half wall/pony wall with glass above. It will make the space look bigger. Luckly, your shower fixtures are located on the opposite wall.

If you'd rather have a full wall mirror, please make sure that it it framed vs. a builder grade looking one that simply is mirror from wall to wall + vanity to under light fixtures.

Personally, I'd rather have separate mirrors - with three sconces - one on each side + one between the two mirrors. However, you may not have enough space to do that since the length of your vanity appears to be around 60".

If you'd be willing to swap some things - it woud be better to have the shower along the back wall - so, when you enter the bathroom, you see the shower and new tile vs. a direct line of vision to the toilet. You could then "hide" the toilet behind the half/pony wall (no glass above) if you felt the need to + probably increase the width of your vanity.

Agree with dani. Here are photos of how you can either “decorate” a lower pony wall, OR if it’s not wall bearing, you can eliminate it entirely.

    Two pony wall looks.

    No wall look.

Thank you Dani and Red. 20 years ago when we built this bathroom, we tried to swap the shower and toilet as Dani suggests, but it was just too tight. Plus the shower door side would terminate in the middle of the only window, which could not be moved. So, we are stuck with this layout I think. I do like the look of the pony wall with glass, and agree on the framed mirror. Thanks for your suggestions and the photos!

I think once toy trade out the shower pan the whole shower will need a redo and really once you strat this the whole bathroom will be affected to just change a nice leakproof shower pan which I much prefer to a tile one .Some new light bars and IOOMO no room for a bench in that shower . You could do a glass shower screen to replace the slider but not as warm .Sounds an a read read that this will be really a gut so I like 12 x24 porcelain tile for bathroom floors and shower walls same tile only smaller for shower floors . The new lights a nice ne counter with a top that works with the 12 x24 tile .I like the mirrors as they are but I would take the vanity to a car paint shop and have it painted in a gloss finish to go with the rest . I do this often with vanities that are in good shape just do not work with the rest . You choose a car color it stands up to everything in a bathroom too.

Greetings. We've been taking our time with this project. Would be interested in your additional thoughts on our progress and direction. Reminder that the overall layout is staying the same.

    1. We will do the pony wall between vanity and shower. New sliding shower door.

    2. Thinking of recessing 2 mirrored medicine cabinets over sinks. Somewhat limits design flexibility but extra storage is worth it we think.

    3. See attached image for our ideas on pallette. We are thinking pale beige 12x24 tiles for floor and shower walls (not yet selected). Will find something complementary for shower floor and vanity counter. We are thinking of textured blue wallpaper "focus wall" for the wall behind toilet (something like the grasscloth sample shown). Remaining walls will be painted a light neutral color. Surrounding rooms are Revere Pewter so we'll look for something a bit lighter that works with tile.

    4. We're hoping to fit 3 narrow, vertical sconces around mirrors, but TBD on spacing and wiring. May need something above the mirrors instead.

    4. OPEN QUESTIONS:

    • For the wall behind and next to toilet: add wainscotting?
    • Vanity and cabinet on left. We think the dark cherry would work the new tile, etc. but are still mulling painting them. Would probably do a blue to complement wallpaper and tile.
    • Hardware color (I tend to favor chrome as it is timeless, but not sure here).

Appreciate any commentary or suggestions on any and all! THANK YOU

Love the pony wall, sliding shower recessed mirrored medicine cabinets and narrow sconces in-between (if possible). Lower lighting is always better in any room where you do make up.

I would wait on the wainscoting idea. Usually it is best all around a room wherever there is ceiling height walls.

I have a prejudice against “accent” or “focus walls” in such a small room. One idea all around is better. Would you consider wainscoting + blue wallpaper on the entire periphery?

Large format tiles in the shower and on the floor (not the shower floor since more grout is necessary in there) sound wonderful. Something with a bit of blue might also work. (A friend used these porcelain tiles and the shower is stunning.)

@RedRyder Thank you! I'll have to think about papering all the walls, especially with something like the navy grasscloth. We're trying to open up this small bathroom and worried the dark blue all around will close it in. Love the tile you shared!

My tiny powder room looks and feels “bigger” with white wainscoting around the periphery. Wallpaper above.

Small bathrooms can be cozy with dark colors.

Or a light color on the bottom and your blue on top.

RedRyder Love the pics. Thank you! Regarding the tile your friend used...

    1. Do you know what kind of tile was used for the shower floor?

    2. What did your friend do on the walls surrounding that tile?

    3. Do you know what was used for vanity counter?

I have a Tile Shop nearby and plan to check out DreamBlue. Although I like the calming beige look I started with, that tile is striking! (I trust my eye once I see something but coming up with the vision is a challenge. Your inspiration is helping!)

I also really like some of the patterned wallpapers you showed in photos. But I worry with a tile like the Dreamblue we should stay with something solid or not too busy. Do you agree?

Thanks so much for your help.
