Advice on wonky kitchen/will L shaped island help

last year
last modified: last year

Hello,

We bought a home with a wonky kitchen and need cost effective ideas on how to fix it as we will likely move again in 5-6 years. One option we like which is to install a counter height L shaped island starting from the wall where the the window is located. Doing so will have the countertop overlap the window which feels weird. The other option is to close-in one side of the window to then have the L shaped countertop and island flush with the wall. We really don’t want to lose the window as the house can feel a bit like cavey on this side.

any suggestions? As you can see, the previous owners made some updates to the space so it’s not a complete remodel. We’re just looking to add/finish the look as any potential buyer will feel as we do.

It looks like a pretty standard kitchen to me. The island you're suggesting seems a bit odd and if you're moving in 5 years, a lot of bother. What functional problem are you hoping to solve? More storage space? You could put shelving between the cabs and the window

More separation from the dining area? Maybe you want an L-shaped counter, maybe you want some furniture, like a sideboard

More seating? Your table could probably fit more chairs if they were smaller

More counterspace? You might be able to have some counter pull-outs.

Hi, going for a more defined/space that flows from kitchen to dining area which will have a round table. the area where the window w shutters used to be an eat in kitchen but the previous owner removed the walls. to date, there is no flow, very little counter space next stove for prep, and quite a bit of distance between the stove and sink. the entire space is one continous galley (kitchen, dining, study). also, looking for a space for familiy and guests to casually hang out while making dinner.

The only way we can help you is if you post a labeled plan with everything measured. 1/4” graph paper works great. Otherwise we are guessing.

there are options with freestanding pieces . Just depends if you want work surface, with or without stools, drawers, or storage below..... Id place something right down the middle but leave space at the one end to go from sink side to the fridge side easily.

It looks like the two sides of the galley are so far apart, moving between sink and range leads to drips and steps. Would you consider changes more extensive than adding an L?

Yes, they are very far apart. when we measured/tested a 2-2.5 ft wide island or table would fit best in the middle space . would be open to changes other than an L but not looking to completely remodel as in move sinks, range, etc.

I made a 2x4x36 prep table it solved a similar issue i had. I sourced the legs on line and used a walnut boos butcher block top.

Another vote for a freestanding piece. we bought an island for our kitchen as it had very little counter or cabinet space. Big improvement,

As herb and aunt have said, a freestanding ”island” might be useful. They can be beautiful, substantial or petite (we need your measurements, as @HALLETT & Co. points out), stationary or mobile. Best of all it will give you functionality with very little fuss while allowing the next owners some measure of freedom to easily change things.

If you want a project, perhaps consider that you can double the lower cabinetry on the range wall if you replace the low hanging window with one of appropriate height.

Alternatively, you could create a shallow tall pantry to the right of the range with a sort of built in buffet (or window seat, again, measurements) under that window using cabinetry.

Post a to scale plan here on graph paper showing windows , in this case the height from floor to sill, all doorways where those lead and every measurement clearly marked . Posted here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post . Info as to what you need in the space for sure not things you think somebuyer might want. Is tat a pantry door next to the mud room ? I think a moveable island might work but it also could just become a barrier on movement from fridge to sink so test with some boxes maybe first.

I've lived with that kitchen. The problem is that the the two cabinet runs are too far apart to function well together -- a galley kitchen needs to be more narrow. Yeah, more space isn't always good.

Since you're going to move in a few years, I wouldn't look to do anything big. The new owners may have completely different ideas and almost certainly won't be willing to pay for your idea of better.
