Midcentury modern exterior, design dilemma help needed!

Please send me your ideas for how to LEAN IN to the modern style of our house exterior--without changing cladding/siding or paint (we've done that)! Much appreciated in advance!

Not sure about the finish on those wood posts.

The house looks like it could use some significant outdoor lighting.

The house looks good. You need more of that wood color of the columns. I think your next move is the landscaping. Build some benches and planter boxes with the same color wood as the columns. Or add a decorative component ( like a slat wall ) to the left in front of the low windows.

The landscaping is usually more of a crisp design - well thought out ; a bit more structural. Same with the walkway.

This next one is a before and after.

    Good luck!

Debbi, so helpful! What do you think of these and corten steel planers (vs. wood) that turn a rusty matching color?

Love the "before and after," by the way--thank you again, Debbi Washburn!

^ agree, a local landscape pro can provide you with a plan that you install over time

The rust planters are nice. But make sure the color really goes. Is the ceiling of your porch area done in the wood? that would be nice. Whatever you do - take your time with it. Don't try to throw too much at it. Mid Century is usually simple and clean lines.

Yes to the mention above of more lighting!

    Here are some more pictures:

Cream color with wood ( a little darker than your wood )

Divider wall for defining an area

    Rust planter and wood planter

wood planter and decorative trellis - could be nice under the tall windows

Floating flower bed - sometimes mid mod homes don't have flower beds against the house. They become more architectural to work with pathways . Look at the house and wood color and the interesting placement of some wood siding.

I normally don't advocate for taking down trees, but the one on the left looks so close to the house, that it will need to be removed at some point. Now would be the time.

What does the driveway area look like? Take a picture from the driveway angled to the front door. It looks like you have a decent size front yard so you could spare some of it to make a beautiful walk up to the front door.

Maybe do a wood patio to the right of your entry porch - not with that pergola.

Basically - there is a ton of stuff you can do here. Be selective, take your time and hire professionals to help you so you don't overdo it. Get someone to help with the hardscapes - walkway, patio, planters . Then get with a great gardener for the right plants for you r location, lighting, soil etc. Don't start any work until you have estimates and are confident in what you want done.

    Best of luck to you!

Please post after pictures - even if it is a year later - it is so helpful to others

To Debbie Washburn and Patricia Colwell, first of all, THANK YOU, both! So appreciate your insights. Here is the back of the house, which I've always liked better, and the wood underneath all of the roofing and fascia. Hopefully this addresses some of your questions! Debbie Washburn, those are great ideas and I will have to see about the corten steel planters matching well enough. All of the metal wrapping the windows is bronze.

A wood patio might be awesome--and I actually love the idea, if not of a pergola, a wooden awning over those to right front windows.

Regarding removal of the tree, that depends on what sort of tree it is. It has a vaguely Dogwoodish look, in which case it poses no threat to the house. Imo it gives a Japanese style vibe to the house. A close up of the leaves would get you an id.

That last picture you posted really shows the wood color better. That is really nice.

I do think landscaping and some more wood out front will be great!

To my eyes, the columns would be better dark like the rest of the trim. Then I would extend the overhead past the right-side windows and connect the lower and upper windows with dark panels/trim (even though that does involve a bit of cladding and painting). Classic MCM contrasts strong horizontals against strong verticals. Then bold, geometric landscaping (grasses?).
