Design Dilemma Living Room

Mid Century Fireplace Mantel

Hi, I recently purchased a house, built 1958. I am planning to replace the mantel on the firplace. The current mantel is 58". The brick of the fireplace wall is 88". I'm leaning toward a thin wood mantel shelf that extends the full 88". Thoughts? Ideas? Pic 1 is current state. Pic 2 is what I'm thinking...

Not too thin and for sure not that close to a firebox ever Just the same height as it in now and I would do the thick one The thin one in the other piccs I would bet is stone
