Rose or roses with best fall flush

What rose or roses give you a generous fall rebloom?

Here, it's Desdemona, Olivia, and Plum Perfect. My neighbor's Mother of Pearl is going bonkers!! The roses are so beautiful this year with the warm autumn weather we're having (zone 7, LI NY)

Most of my HT's go berserk in the fall. Ring of Fire, Louise Estes, Hot Princess, Brinessa and Mavrik all try to out perform each other. My mini's and miniflora's are right there with my HT's. My Shrubs, Floribundas and OGR's do very well but are more spring performers.

You know, the best rose for earliest spring flush and latest fall flush in my garden was Sweet Fragrance. This Ping Lim rose, from his older Easy Elegance line, was fantastic for first to bloom in spring to last to bloom in fall, and plentiful non-nodding blooms in between. It was short, not over 30" tall, heat tolerant, winter hardy with no protection, and a strong repeater. I write was, because I took my Sweet Fragrance out because of black spot issues I had with it.

I am tempted to return a couple strategically placed SFs to the front of my bed, just behind the Drift rose and spray them, which spraying I have gone back to finding that my no-spray rose bush program proved to be an impossibility.

Sweet Fragrance is such a good rose. There 's a photo of Sweet Fragrance on HMFR of a test bed at the International Rose Test Garden, Portland, OR, taken in June, 2023. Take a look. You'll see what I mean. m

I grow lots of oldies. Many of the roses with multiflora in their background bloom reliably for me in fall. So polyanthas Lady Ann Kidwell, Margo Koster, and "Schmidt's Smooth Yellow" have fall buds on them. My miniatures Popcorn and Gourmet Popcorn flower in fall. The old floribundas Else Poulsen, Permanent Wave, Pink Bountiful, and Ma Perkins are reliable as well.

China roses: singles Mutabilis, Yellow Mutabilis, Miss Lowe's Variety, and then Old Blush (my rose is in commerce as "Alice Hamilton") perform splendidly in the fall in my warm winter zone. Agree with the above that the teas are great in fall flush -- Baronne Henriette Snoy, Souvenir de Pierre Notting, and Mrs. B. R. Cant in particular.

When it comes to hybrid teas, I also grow mostly oldies... Barcelona (aka Francis Dubreil), Contrast, Dame de Coeur, Eclipse, Feu Pernet-Ducher (child of Marechal Niel), Jadis (aka Fragrant Memory), Mister Lincoln, Tahitian Sunset, and Talisman give me flowers consistently.

    Lady Ann Kidwell lately.

    Bolero. As advertised. Heavenly.
Munstead Wood. Gets better with age. I’ve had that rose at least 8 years, 6 in its present spot.
Full Sail. Doing better than I expected. The blooms do turn yellow when they are cut, but they perfume the room. …
Moonstone bush. A little bit of Flamingo Dancer coming over the wall.

Perle d’ Or is giving me a lovely flush right now.

Annie Laurie McDowell has been pushing out a bunch of blooms too.

Brindabella Purple Prince is loading up on buds so it’s flush should start soon. others that have been giving me lots of blooms are Cream Veranda, Savannah, and Deelish.

I’ll second Annie Laurie McDowell as a good one for a heavy fall flush. I have six of them on a fence and they’ve been blooming heavily for weeks on end this fall. The fragrance is wonderful.

I have had the largest fall flush of roses that I've ever had. I am assuming it's the warm weather balanced with some good rains. It started out with the china 'Old Blush' (I have the climbing form, which usually doesn't do much in the fall), then several others joined in --the noisette 'Crepuscule', hybrid musks 'Bishop Darlington' and 'Penelope', tea 'Safrano', hybrid tea 'Lafter', and David Austin's "Munstead Rose" have been covered in blooms and all have buds near to opening. 'Blush Noisette' keeps on keepin' on - it has been in bloom continuously since the spring with the exception of when the temps got above 90 degrees this summer. The tea 'Mrs. Dudley Cross' has the most beautiful leaf growth I think I've ever seen on it, and it is also covered in buds. It will be interesting to see how things go over the next few weeks as the night time temperatures go down.

    Graham Thomas in this fall

Beverly still has the sweetest fragrance

forever, I second that sweet fragrance on Beverly. Mine may be even better than previously this summer?

Such beauties. How much sun do you ladies give your Annie Lauri McDowell? Mine is over three years old and in full sun but it is growing at a 🐢 pase.

SoCal, my Annie Laurie McDowell are all in full sun, pretty much all day long. One of them near the end of the fence gets a bit of shade in the afternoon from a nearby tree.

Judi, I guess it does not like me 😭

Judi how tall are your Annies? I have one but it is staying short

I don’t know any of your particular experiences with Annie but everything I have read about her (and experienced with mine) says to make sure you debud the first couple of years as she will bloom at the expense of growth

Kentucky, your Beverly is gorgeous!! Makes me want to try it again. I had a pretty big one that split right down the middle in a wind storm . The blooms were such s great color.

    last modified: 6 months ago

Kristine, If you liked Beverly it’s definitely worth trying again. Yes, I’ve had some issues with wind damage, too. She’s a big bush. I use green stakes to lessen the wind damage opportunities, move them around during the season, and generously cut the blooms.

    This is from Nov. 9th

    Sept. 9th

Judi, hang on. Your Annie will only get better. I have 2 own root and one grafted (Wisconsin Roses) and the grafted one does grow faster but I love them all.

Ambridge Rose yesterday, late November, freezing temperatures over night and had snow. Still loaded with buds and determined to bloom.

    Plum perfect today.

    Clothilde Soupert

Olivia Rose Austin, Lion’s Fairytale, and First Crush both have a binch if buds that will be in a race against the first hard freeze.

How about rose bushes with the most rose blooms? I wanna see a rose bush be full of blooms like mum's plant. Mine is bolero but I still feel like there has to be a better one with less leaf show.

    last modified: 6 months ago

Diane, I disbudded my Annie Laurie McD for four years to get maximum size. It was well worth it. ALMcD also likes to be grafted.

That is a rose I will miss, since it doesn't grow well (at all?) in a zone 5 climate.

All my roses are babies newly planted this summer. So far Icecap looks as though it will be a good bloomer, but it is too early to tell. And since we have freezing temperatures overnight, I doubt it would bloom in November even if/when mature.

Forever a Newbie - I just love your first pic of Graham Thomas especially, clambering up a wooden structure with something else golden in the background, up higher. Is it some sort of frothy blossom or tiny leaves turning gold up there in the trees, I wonder? In any case, they complement each other beautifully. And the structure looks interesting too (seen in more detail in the 2nd pic), in lovely natural wood. Thank you so much for sharing. <3

@comtessedelacouche (10b S.Australia: hotdryMedclimate),thanks for the kind words🌹 The wood structure is a pergola. It is 10 feet high and I am barely 5 feet so I was taking the photo upward. The back ground should be the brown leaves of the oak trees high in the sky. They appeared golden glistering in the autumn sun.

Flamingo Dancer (striped). A fabulous climber. And beautiful Bolero.

The bottom picture is the second one of Flamingo Dancer. Stripes didn’t come out well on this one.

Buds of Life of the Party. This one hasn’t stopped blooming since April. Our Lady of Guadalupe (pink). Also goes like the Energizer bunny. Lavender Veranda loves the cooler weather. Again, apologies for posting LOTP twice.

I like the petal shape on LV. Delicate and different.

My roses are mostly done for the year

Lady in Red is fabulous the whole season

Golden opportunity has finally developed the golden color that I had been looking for. I hope next year it will start as good in spring

Purple Prince blooms are frozen but the fragrance is still strong

Looking forward to a new year of roses
