Looking for best way to update a red brick fireplace

Please tell me what you think I can do to update this fireplace in my living room. ( New mantle? Paint brick? Add new facade to make fireplace stone-like? Larger painting? Mirror? Collage of paintings ? )
And what do I place on the mantle ? All ideas are greatly appreciated.
A lot of oak on ceilings, catwalk, steps. Any thoughts about whether these should be painted, etc.?
Room hasn’t been touched in twenty five years.

I like the brick and would leave it (new mantle would be good). I think you should focus your resources on (1) installing a more modern (think MCM style) railing and chandelier, and (2) changing the knotty pine ceilings (paint or whitewash maybe?).

It feels like the house is fighting with itself on what it wants to be. The structure, fireplace, and stairs/ balcony are all very modern and clean-lined, whereas the knotty pine ceilings and traditional railings, mantel, and chandelier are trying to pull the house towards a more rustic/ dated cabin vibe. One of these styles has to go, and the rustic knotty pine vibe seems like the path of least resistance!
