It has overwintered 4 winters in my garden

Love pineapple sage. I don’t bother trying to save. Mine grew from a cutting size to a six foot shrub in one season. I made about 20 plants from that one original plant!

mxk, I was wondering the same thing. I do have mine in a large pot, but I don't know if it will even overwinter in my garage or pole barn, neither of which are heated. I guess I'll just figure it's an annual and grow a new one next year since I'm in the same z5b in Michigan that you are. This is the first year I've grown it, and I've found that it won't tolerate the same conditions my regular sage does.

I grow it every year, always start with a small pot in spring. Mine still looks good here in teh beginning of November. No blooms, but foliage still pretty decent and a good 4.5' foot or so tall. It's always quite a handsome shrub-like annual. Great addition to fruit salads, too :0) I guess it wouldn't hurt to cut it back and leave it in-ground over winter to see what happens, worst thing is I'll dig it out in the spring instead of now if it croaks.

Mine survives in a pot although I swear, every autumn, I am planting it in the ground at the much more exposed allotment because watering a large salvia is one of my most onerous summer chores...it always seems on the verge of dessication and has to be watered twice a day in heat I am always less bothered about its survival when the end of summer rolls around There are so many other, more rewarding sages).

As you note, mxk3, it is such a vigorous plant it can be raised from seed or cuttings every year and it will still make a sizeable mature plant. They do get going very late and can look quite lifeless until late May...when basal shoots may (or not) appear.
