Cream cabinets that complement your new countertops (use same material for backsplash) and run cabinets up to the ceiling.

I see two key elements here: the design of your cabinets and their fronts, and the color. The style leans more towards classic rather than modern. If you paint them a flat color, it will look unappealing and give off a “painted over” vibe.

If you decide to paint the doors, you must first remove the polyurethane to expose the wood. Then, repair and sand the surface before applying multiple layers of paint with sanding in between.

This is the professional approach, and it will likely cost more than getting brand new fronts painted in your desired color.

The only way I see this cabinet style looking nice and modern is with a glaze finish like this:

You didn't say, but are you painting cabinets or getting new ones.

Getting all new cabinetry. the rest of the house is more modern and masculine so starting fresh (minus floors)

I'd start with refinishing the floors -- go with a neutral color. The strongly red tone of the floors is driving the entire bus here; it's a bossy, hard color to work with color. No need to rip out flooring, a simple sand and re-stain will do; do the floors in entire first floor in the same new stain color. Once that's done, choose the fixed elements in the kitchen -- your design possibilities will be greatly increased once the red floor is gone.

Its engineered floor so sanding and restaining will cost as much as new flooring give or take. the entire house has that similar floor althou steps and 2nd floor is more brown family than red. as a result, i am keeping the floor and need to work with it.

I also think a green would work nicely with your flooring...

Try to find a green that doesn't have a yellow undertone. If you go too much in the spring green or mint green direction, the floors won't work as well.

IMO first get much better lighting at least 3 x as many pots as you have all LED 4000K 4" pots . That will also maybe make you not have to paint at all. I do not think those cabinets are all thta bad to spend huge money on really outdated cabinets when lighting could be the answer . Some pendants over the island and even under abinet lighting all cheaper than a new counter and a pro paint job which BTW will cost more than new cabinets. Please no glazed cabinets they always look dirty and a real dated look IMO

You might as well keep what you have if you're going to do brown cabinets.

Blue would be nice; navy could be too dark.

what i learned when I remodelled our kitchen is that the interior lighting dominates the cabinet’s colour.

If the kitchen lacks windows and your room is dark in general, bright cabinets and counter top will turn out better.

As much as green/blue cabinets look nice in the photos you should notice the lighting i those pictures.

I’d personally invest in a colour that matches the space and lighting of the room rather than choosing it based on whats trendy today, specially that i don’t have deep pockets to change/swap things on a yearly basis.

Agreed on lighting - that will be added. and i agree on cabinet coloring that i sint want anything trebdy. leaning to brown (vs the red i have now)

Soft greens and blues will certainly balance with the rich, warm tones of the floor. I love some of the softer green suggestions above if you are feeling interested in color!

If you aren’t looking for a lot of color, look into great or cream. Cream will give everything a soft, bright, fresh, clean and minimal look. Grey is a lovely neutral as well. The floor will help warm the room and also use wood accents to add warmth and richness elsewhere
