Sink size? Trying to maximize cabinet space

DD is looking to redo her small 35 yo kitchen. She currently has a double bowl sink but will go wtih a single bowl now. Can a 30 inch (truly 28 in bowl) fit in a 30 inch cabinet? Specs say one needs a 33 inc cabinet but is that a necessity or a convenience for install? Being able to downsize to a 30 inch cabinet gives her 6 inches of base cabinet elsewhere.

Would a 25 inch sink be out of the question? This house is a starter type 1400 sq ft house, 3 bed, 2 ba in the midwest.

Joseph Corlett, the forum’s sink expert, has said many times that can be done…as long as the plumber uses straps, not clips to secure the sink. Joseph might pipe in himself, if he sees this.

She is most likely going to use a top mount sink and laminate due to budget constraints if that helps.

I'm doing this in my kitchen, using the Hercules sink system suggested by Joseph Corlett. I have an undermount Elkay going in a 30" frameless IKEA cabinet.

Yes. A 30" sink undermounts in a 30" sink base cabinet, no matter what the sink manufacturer says, as long as the sink is strapped, not clipped or blocked, in place.

I think a top mount sink in a laminate countertop would require the base to larger than the sink. It has to do with having enough space for the anchor clips to be installed. They pull the sink down onto the countertop. An under mount sink you are pushing the sink up against the bottom of the sink using the strapping system.

Technically, Mainenell is correct. However, I put a 33" (30.5" bowl size) Kraus stainless steel top mount over a 34" cabinet. (Replacing a very heavy cast iron sink.) I was able to install a couple of clips on the back & front of the sink but there wasn't room to install the clips on the sides. (There is about an inch of space each side, room for the clips but not enough room to be able to install them.) Used plumber's putty between the sink flange & counter surface because I wanted to be able to easily pull the sink out...normally adhesive (tub & tile) caulk is used. Sink is rock solid even without the 'glue' of adhesive caulk. Once the drain is connected, the sink isn't going anywhere.

Keep in mind: a 30" base cabinet actually has a 28-1/2" wide opening since the sidewalls of the cabinets are about 3/4" thick. You will be able to fit a 30" topmount sink into the cabinet, however, you will not be able to clip it in place using manufacturer's clips. A 30" topmount sink usually requires a 29-1/4" wide cutout, so a 30" wide base cabinet won't do. If you want to maximize, your best bet is a 28" wide topmount sink. There are a few manufacturers that do make this size.
