The things appliance salespeople say...

I was intrigued reading about full induction cooktops on Houzz and decided to call a local supplier to ask about them. One question had to do with use of induction around a person with a pacemaker. My best friend has a pacemaker and would be visiting me regularly, and I asked if this would be safe. (This was before I Googled the question). The salesperson actually said "As long as she doesn't lay on it," she'd be fine! Then I Googled it and it appears medical professionals say those with pacemakers have to stay at least 2 feet away from induction appliances. Now I question everything else the salesman told me about the cooktops...

    Induction cooktops aren't that complex and there's plenty of information about them. For example, CR Ratings and anecdotal comments from owners on sites such as Home Depot and Best Buy. After selecting a size, (most common: 30", 36"), read the spec sheets to determine the dimensions (very important: cutout dimensions) and required electrical circuit (including electrical box placement), and read the owners manuals to understand how they operate, particularly the controls.

    Looking for one with physical knobs? The decision is easy; there are only two reasonably-priced models: Frigidaire FPIC3077RF and FPIC3677RF.

    I concur with the above by @HU-171482230. It is, I think, worth expanding on his comment.

    First, fields don't become far field (inverse square) until a number of 'antenna' dimensions away from the source. Second, this is only true if the source actually radiates. In reality, a hob is not intended to radiate an electromagnetic field. Without a pan the field lines over the hob coil are closed magnetic lines occupying a toroidal volume that is of coil size. The reaction with pans is magnetic in nature.

    Most here are familiar with FM radio (~ 100 MHz mid-band), where a wavelength is 3 meters. At this frequency half-wave dipole antennas are 1.5m and quarter-wave whips (as on '60s cars) are 0.75m (~30 inches). These dimensions apply whether on a car, on a wall, on a roof, or on a 400-ft transmitting tower.

    My cooktop's induction hobs operate in the 40-kHz region, where a wavelength is 7.5 kilometers. To radiate into the far field the hob would have to radiate electromagnetic waves as if it were an antenna that is slightly larger than 1/10000 of a wavelength. This would be like using a 0.3-mm antenna for FM -- smaller than a solder drop short on the end of a coaxial cable. When investigating my earlier Kenmore cooktop, I had to insert a loop under a pan edge to see any signal on my oscilloscope.

    Our induction cooktop had no effect on my wife's pacemaker. I think @drcindy's friend will be safe from the cooktop.

    As for being safe from salesmen, that is a different topic. 8-D

    The best salesperson will tell you all the positive features of the products in stock, none of the drawbacks and nothing about any other products.

    Take everything with a grain of salt that is said about a product that is said by a person that is trying to sell it to you.

    Have your friend ask her cardiologist. I would trust a physician over a salesperson or a manufacturer.
