In floor drop in heater question

I have this style of heater that’s sitting in a cavity specific for it in the floor. I have no idea why my husband agreed to such a thing, but that’s neither here nor there. It’s in an incredibly awkward spot. I’m also very worried about my 2 year old hurting himself on it. Is there any sort of heat resistant replacement cover or any ideas on what can be done to put above or over it? again it’s in such a terrible spot, nothing really makes sense with it 😓 we don’t use it at the moment as we are waiting for custom curtains for obvious reasons… but there’s gotta be some ideas… I’ve just never even seen such an … interesting contraption before.

Sorry but was a weird choice and IMO a baseboard heater would be the best choice now and maybe just a console table in front of it to discourage little fingers or the console table right above it to still ge the heat but the children can't get at is easily .JUst basically a top with 4 legs about 30" high should do the trick

I have never seen this type of heater and do you not have heat from a boiler or furnaace ? I guess I need more info please .Why custom drapes in fact IMO no drapes if that is an electric heater . As for a cover that would knd of defeat the purpose of the heater . I would for sure be rethinking this choice .

Isn’t it the most bizarre thing you’ve seen? and can you believe it was put in 2 years ago, like why on earth? I feel bad cause the electrician talked my husband into it (i assume) and the unit it’s self was incredibly expensive. At the time we only had Ducts that spanned to half the house. that particular room still has no ducts and is quite chilly… i’d much rather just get a flipping baseboard or … live with the chill. I wasn’t thinking of a cover like to stop the heat as I don’t need the added risk of fire, but i was curious if there was a replacement actual ventilated cover that some how didn’t transfer the heat to the top, but now that i say that i realize that’s probably not possible.
Then I was thinking maybe others this this type of unfortunate unit have had custom built furniture or other functional contraptions above it… it was a long shot…. but easier to ask than to have to have the discussion of “you made the weirdest choice… we need to get rid of it”

Are you trying to decide if you should remove it? Have you recently read the installation manual and the user manual? Knowing how hot it gets may help you make a decision. You could get an indoor/outdoor thermometer to test the temperature of the vent. Put the "outdoor" sensor on the vent, the "indoor" (or master) sensor where you can see it all day. Check it frequently and write down the temperatures when you do.

Is there a crawl space or basement underneath this room? If so is it feasible to connect a duct to your forced hot air heating system and eliminate the in-floor specialty heater?

Don't overreact. It's placed where a normal supply vent would have been placed: in front of the siding door. That is to combat any cooling coming from the window.

Your two year old will not be two forever. When the device is turn on do the metal vents get hot like a normal furnace vent? I'm guessing touching it once will keep your child away from the metal vent.

There are plastic magnetic covers that can be placed on top of the vent but it's more likely your child will hurt himself on that than the vent in the floor.

There are also magnetic vent screen covers that can be placed over the vent to keep dust from entering the vent.
