What is to the immediate right of the stairs as you enter? That room is also seen at the same time upon entering. We need to know where to draw the eye...what do you want as the focal point in your space?

Well we wanted a dark and moody dining room (dark knight by sw) and the living room is supposed to be a speakeasy lounge. We decided this later after painting it. So we will not repaint but we will add liquor to our cabinets, record player stand. Just hoping for a moody vibes without paining the room dark. The room to the right is my husbands office.

The sofa seems in the correct spot there but I don't like seeing the side of the armchair from the entry. Move that chair opposite the sofa and put a console table between the windows.

Large artwork over the sofa will draw the eye to the left and away from the office.

Place a potted tree behind the right newel post to screen the office from the front door.

IMO that furniture is too big for the space and I have no clue how the pics you show now relate to what looks like a big open space in the before pics Maybe take some pics after you remove all the stuff so we can see the space .

Just was at a home that undertook remodel during COVID--what else was there to do. The motivation around much of what they did was so they could float their HUGE sectional with it's back to what would be your staircase. Those on the sectional for conversation/TV watching--whatever really wanted to decrease the traffic walking between them and the TV. Every time I see a room my brain always goes there...create a walk way NOT in the thick of where people are living. It maybe not be the most modern way but it's what people appreciate in the long run, i.e. flip the couch. Float it.

For a moody vibe, use downlights like library lamps and for art. I would avoid regular lampshades that direct light to the ceiling.

Moody is neutral tones like your gray sofa, plus wood tones and jewel tone accent colors. Most photos of moody rooms have dark walls but they don't have to be. Use lots of texture.

With your furniture, this is likely the only possible layout.
