How to deal with the small space between two porch posts

last year

I have a 1920 clapboard- sided bungalow with the porch closed in with a half wall that is clapboard- sided. I want to replace that half wall with posts and railing. That would be easy except the door and steps are not centered. The railing on one side of the door between two posts would be only about one foot.
