You could show your kitchen plan ? What are the materials? You can do an insert in a cabinet clad hood and you haven't enough information or context to help you.

I need to see your space not sure waht amasculine hood looks like and honestly I mostly dilike wood hoods and much prefer a good quality stainless one with the proper CFM I often do a hood and range the same width just up the CFMthis is my 36" range with a36" hood 1200 CFM I love Vent-aHood brand

A 42" is the minimum desired size. Going 48" can be oversized, and take away storage, depending on the actual kitchen design, which has not been shared.

FYI I run a catering biz from my home and the hood is used every day for long periods of time and works perfectly. My hood vents straight up through a 8' ceiling no turns even one 90degree turn in the venting drops the CFM the capture area I do agree needs to be large for sure.
