Dan, enjoy the onions! I buy from Dixondale and this year's bundles were quite a bit smaller than usual. I get the "long day" onions, being here in Michigan, so I got some Walla Walla, Red Wing, Cippolini, Sterling and Highlander. Usually I can plant a row with one bundle and this year 5 bundles only got me 3 rows. I often get a mix of bigger plants and very tiny plants and they all grow just fine, so I'm sure yours will too.

The Red Wing plants were quite large this year, so maybe they are bundled by weight, although the other varieties appeared similar in size to most other years. I do like the Red Wing onions very much, the picture right now on Dixondale's site of Red Wing onions in a basket is my picture which I sent to them because they did so well last year and they stored well into February.

I will admit to being somewhat disappointed this year, although I did get 52 plants and their site says a minimum of 4 dozen, so I got what was advertised although it was fewer than I got in the past.

Yes, I'm addicted to Dixondale. My local nursery ships in a big crate of several varieties, and I get a bundle for $2.50. No shipping costs! And yes, the bundle always contains a mix of bigger and smaller plants, but usually the smallest are sort of pencil-lead thickness. This time, lots were even finer. They all seem healthy, though. I usually get two bundles - one for rows of bulbs (though it's hard to eat fifty onions in four months, even when you're giving a bunch away), and another for rows of green onions. But this time one bundle served both purposes. Expected availability for my short day onions is November, and it may just be that the plants were less mature than usual at that time for some reason.
