Kitchen floor choice

I had a flood in my kitchen and need to replace the floors. My whole main level is the same hardwood, but I‘m wondering if I can just replace the kitchen flooring with some sort of tile to avoid replacing the whole main level.

Maybe a vinyl tile and put in some transitions to split the rooms..

Any suggestions for what would look good? Or do you think it would be a mistake?

Your hardwood is lovely, and the continuous flow of one type of flooring is beautiful. I would contact a reputable hardwood flooring expert and replace the damaged area stained to match the rest. You will regret chopping up the flooring with tile.

Replace the hardwood flooring.

Put drain trays with drain hoses under refrigerator, dishwasher, and sink.

The continuous hardwood floor is a classy, stylish, and special look. A tile floor makes it JAK Just Another Kitchen.

bring some floor samples in. I would pick something different than the wood. Use the opportunity and either tile or paint the wall w the open shelves. You can make your kitchen a bit more interesting and show some personality and not disrupt the theme in your home which seems to be white. Are these pics from a listing? It doesnt look like anyone lives there.

use that wall with the shelves for a bit of color whether tile or paint. if this is an older kitchen as it appears......you might find products on clearance for floor and some wall tile, and you can feel okay if you end up redoing things later on.

Our plumber told us about a system with water sensors under the washing machine, fridge, DW, water heater, all connected to the main water valve. If water is detected in any of those locations, the main water valve is shut off. Cheap insurance!

My condolences. Nice floor and lovely home. Do not replace the whole main level. How large is the damaged portion in your kitchen? I would bring in a flooring expert to see if you can have sections made to match. A really skilled person can do the work and make it look nearly seamless.

If you cannot find someone to do a good enough job, then yes, you can find a classy tile that looks good with the rest of your first floor. I have a historic herringbone wood floor in my home with a slate looking tile in my kitchen and it is a nice transition. It is similar to the second picture @Beverly posted.

@John Liu - I had a tray under my washing machine and twice it leaked and the water sprayed outside the tray. They seem like good insurance, but have not worked well for me. Bummer :(

We have water sensors connected to an alarm for all appliances that use water…sinks, dishwasher, and fridge in the kitchen, the washing machine in the laundry room, and water heater in basement. Additionally, there is an automatic shutoff valve at the main…should the system detect a leak. Worked flawlessly, when a hose from the dishwasher sprung a leak. No damage to our wood floor.
